Hi everyone. I'm looking for some advice. With the drop in price on CRTs I've decided to give it one last go. I used to have a Sony 1030q that I had lots of fun with ages ago. Then I tried a Sony 1270Q. I didn't have much fun with it though. I couldn't keep it converged for more than a couple days.

Anyways to my questions. I bought a Marquee 8500 for $750 through Curt a few days ago. It hasn't shipped yet. I keep having doubts on whether or not to stay with it or try and get a better one. I'd rather not spend more if I don't really need to. I'm not a super picky videophile by any means. But I've been reading that Marquees don't have good accurate colors without the color corrected lens or being liquid coupled. How bad is it? Are the reds a really ugly shade of orange or something? How bad is haloing? How does 1080p look on it? Like I said, I'm not super picky there. On video I don't really notice a difference between 1080p and 720p.

My other option is to really bite the bullet and get a either a 9500 LC for around $1500 or spend even more and get a G90 for $2500. This is not an option I really want to do unless the 8500 is just not going to cut it. Shipping from Curt is $375-$450 depending on weight. Needless to say I only want to do it once. What do you all think? I just want a good Home Theater projector for Blu Rays and occasional gaming. I don't want to have to upgrade for a few years. If the 8500 will do the trick, I'd love to just stick with it. Thanks!

$1,500 for a nice 9500LC is a great deal. I assume the 8500 is a non-LC machine? You should definitely go with an LC machine.

The reds are not bad by any stretch but will certainly be better if you install a red c-element. You can probably track one down for $250-300. Even without the red-c you will be happy as it's a huge step up over your prior sets.

I wouldn't think for double money the 9500LC is twice as good, IMO a 8500 is really close in performance to the 9500, the biggest deal is the LC which is nice to have. The color filtering issue isn't a big deal unless you see a filtered machine Smile, then no way back. For the 8500 you can get a nice set HD144/145 and an adapter for a couple hundred bucks, that will bring you where an 8" AC can ever go.

Unfortunately, while it seems you can easily get the lenses. The adapters are no longer being made. That's the bad thing there. Like you said though, I have never seen a color corrected one to know the difference.

No, but they are showing up in the buy&sell section time to time, also if you are a handy guy you can also do that adapter from an aluminium sheet with a saw, it won't be that fancy, but doable.

Take the 8500AC and you dont need to worry about glycol, and bad belows, or go with the 9500LC if you want the best.

Just be aware that the Marquee comes in many different editions.. different boards, tubes and with that different performance.

Vou can find 8500AC machines for almost free, so spareparts cost close to nothing.

Hey,
if you know one, who can run a milling machine, adapters won't be a problem.
If the 8500 is in good condition (and i think Curt only sells stuff in perfect condition)
i would stay with it.

Quote:

Honest, nothing but honest. I do hardly notice a difference between those and if, only when watched
on my 23" TFT monitor, on a projector it is even harder to see.
And (being honest too), the TFT is sharper than any CRT projector.
It's even hard to see on my 42" plasma, which has a very good sharpness, color balance, black level etc.

So, if you could live with the colors, you will be happy with the 8500 (i think uncorrected HD8Bs as mine has).
If you want to upgrade, get HD144, HD145 and if you don't have any money, there is the possibility of glycol tinting.
I would have tinted my glycol too (and maybe i will), but as im going to do a blend i will need
that improved sharpnesss from the 144/145s.

Color correcting is a big point i think. The colors seem about right, but look lifeless if they are too bad.
But, as mentioned, you can add color correction for the price of some printer ink to it.

AC/LC never bothered me. you will see halos, yes. But only in such a scene, that has one little bright dot in a dark white field.
That appears only in every 5th movie you watch, and when it's there, i bet it won't bother you, too.

I'm not 100% shure, but LC may cut down the light a bit.

Nash has 2 8500 and one 9500 i think. He can tell the difference. Maybe one should mention, that 8500 and 9500 are the same projectors, you can convert an 8500 to a 9500 by just changing out the tubes and lenses.

Regards, Julian

LC is much better in Contrast ratio and no Halo around white objects in dark scenes .

Julian I converted my AC 8500's to 9500LC's So i have two sets of AC tubes with factory hd 144/145 lens mounts not being used.

Thank you all so much for the help. I feel much better about keeping the 8500 and trying to source the colored hd144/hd145 lenses and mounting adapters. Nash, did I read correctly that you have some spare sets? Would you be willing to sell them?

Ah ok, you converted them. I thought you bought another 9500.
I still wonder about the scheimflug. I was told HD 6 are the same mount as HD 144 /145 and tried a HD 6 (from 9PG) on a 8500.
But i could not get the lens close enough to the tube surface. It was not possible to focus it.

Allright then, you could possibly send me a picture of those lens mounts?
Maybe a pic of your tube mounts including scheinflug plates, too? so i could compare them to my projectors mounts.
Thanks in advance, Julian

Do you still have the 1270? If so steal the colored glycol out of that and put it in the 8500.

Maybe Curt has some old SONY tubes lying around and could offer this as an extra before you ship it.

Wow, I couldn't disagree more. 1080p is literally less than HALF of 720p (about 44% to be exact)… So, either your display isn't resolving 1080p well enough to reveal the significant difference between 720p and 1080p, and/or you're sitting too far from your display (or it's too small for how far you're sitting from it.)

I think I have a couple of each that are literally about ready to go the recycler. I bought a meat syringe a couple of years ago to suck the glycol out, but never did get around to finding a container to store/ship it in. I don't have a lot of time to mess with it, but if anybody has any fast, simple ideas, I'll extract it and ship it to somebody in the US that wants to distribute it before I recycle the tubes.

Cheers,
SC

If you don't want to mess with the glycol, you can hack a simple/cheap approximation with colored lighting gels. It's not perfect but the color improvements are dramatic, nearly as good as color-filtered lenses color-wise. Not as sharp though.

I really want to do the HD144/145 swap. Curt is sending me those as well as old Sony tubes. I hope I can find some adapter plates somewhere. If not, and I just can't live with the stock colors I'll do the glycol. I'm a little nervous of doing that though. Thanks again everyone!!!

I wouldn't take a sale away from Curt, but if you had asked a month ago I could have hand delivered a G70 with back up boards. Wink Like Crabb, I don't have time to mess with it and it will probably end up in a recycling bin. Shocked

Now having mentioned the G70, I would take either the G70 or an XGLC over an 8500. Both are LC and have the correct colored c elements. If you have or can push the budget, then think about a 9" pj. As Crabb told me once "I wish I would have went out on top" or something to that effect. I am going to run my G90 for at least six months and then reassess. Of course that all depends on what happens at Cedia. Smile
