so I had my trusty underling that's been working with me for 10+ years take 16 tubes out of their 1209s housings while I was gone. He's done this lots of times, as have I. The tubes came in the 90 degree 919 housings, so they were useless to me as is.

So he sends me an email saying' I can't finish the tubes, LOL', with the gnarliest of pictures attached of a gaping wound.

Now, he and I are always messing with each other, but somehow my guess is that this one isn't a joke.

Sure enough, his g/f posts that they are at Langley Memorial, which luckily is across the street from my house.

The Olfa knife snapped, and went deeeeeep into his left hand. he nailed himself right at the base of the thumb on the outside of the hand. 2 hours later, 7 stitches inside and 7 outside.

Craig, he paid dearly for your tubes! Mr. Green

Beware, I did something similar to my pinkie about 3 years ago. Cut through muscle, no stitches needed, but I couldn't curl up my finger for about 5 months. CRT work is dangerous stuff!

Oh yeah, sometimes the silicone has dried out that it is nearly immpossible to cut. Last time I did it 4 knifes breaked and I managed to cut myself in the knee, luckily small cut. Nothing serious.

The one I did had damaged glass(thanks USPS) I did cut my thumb in the process thanks to the dried silicone which left a mark for few months

Wow, I was assuming that I was going to have to remove the tubes from the housings myself!

Hope he's all right. I've actually never had much trouble removing the 9" Barco tubes. They aren't as easy as the G90 tubes, but much easier than the Marquee design.

Was there 2 weeks recovering since it ruptured and I almost died. So...take healing for all that it is worth. In case you guys were wondering why I dropped off the face of the earth.....yeah this was why. Because I almost did drop for good.

Judas Priest, that sounded like it was damn-near life-changing.

First of all, why the hell are you guys using Olfa knives? Those snap-blades are for cutting light sh*t like matte-board and PAPER fer chrissakes! There are way better utility knives that use solid blade, with a much more solid grip. X-Acto makes a very nice, fat, hand-fitting model that uses standard flippable utility knife blades.

Second, isn't there some better way than using a manual knife and a bunch of pressure, ready to take a digit off in an instant? Could you get a tiny Dremel tip in there? Either a wheel, or if the angle isn't that good, how about a 1/16" (1.6mm) grout bit?

Seems like one of those projects where there should be a better way that would be faster and safer.

I use a sharp paring knife for Barco tubes. It's strong and has better grip and it won't break off.

Steve, there really isn't a better way on Barco housings. There is hardly enough room to fit a knife in let alone a bit of any kind. If you want the tubes and / or housing to be undamaged when you disassemble than I think power tools are out for these. Usually Barco applied the silicone gingerly so the operation is almost always pretty easy.

Also, the Barco housing is not very thick. Because of this, when I insert the paring knife the housing actually bends (stretches) around the knife. That's how tight it is.

Now if you have 16 sets of tubes in front of you I think fatigue may be a factor. I wouldn't want to do more than three tubes a day. It doesn't take too long (maybe an hour and a half for all three at most), but you hands and concentration get tired.

That sounds similar to a procedure a buddy of mine had after he let testicular cancer go untreated when he was 15. He thought it was normal to go through puberty and have your nut hurt and then turn the size of an orange... that's how long he waited before talking to his folks.

When the doctors diagnosed the cancer it had spread throughout his body and his lymph nodes. The docs eviscerated him and then took out all his organs and put them on his chest. The doc then went and poked around and cut out all the affected lymph nodes until he was as sure as he could be that all the cancer was cut out... oh yeah, and they removed the cancerous testicle.

Talk about a long shot operation, but the guy is now 35 years old or so with no cancer. And he's still functional with one nut.

Amazing to me.

Take all the important stuff off and just soak them in gasoline. Let them soak long enough and no cutting required. The glue will turn to snot and you can just push them out.

I regularly remove tubes from housings... I might suggest that regularly having many vats of gasoline and tubes in a location may be more dangerous than just cutting them out. I don't want to blow up or burn down myself or my warehouse. Also, sometimes you need it done now, not a week or two from now.

I use turpentine for Marquee and NEC tubes sometimes when I have time to spare, but it's really not that hard to cut a Barco tube out of a housing. I've done it 100 times without any injury. It takes about 4 minutes to cut a tube out of a G90 housing.
