Thought this was a permanent fix, but watching a movie last night, still had an occasional quiet crackle. The solderable tips that Tim sent showed up yesterday, so this afternoon I cut the tip back again and put the proper replacement tip on. Works perfectly. Projector has been running for an hour, zero static crackle. I think an important aspect of the real tip is that it's a cap that doubles back over the insulation, making it a bell type of HV electrode, unlike the butt splice I tried to use. It was really easy to put on, took a couple of minutes to solder, trim, and clean and smooth the new tip.
Thanks Tim!!
Steve
