I have a epson powerlite projector. I can get the ps3 to connect to it using a yellow composite video, but the resolution is low.

The projector has a DVI in. I've connected the PS3 to an HDMI cable, then an HDMI->DVI converter then to the projector. It doesn't give me a "no signal" blue screen, but a black screen. I've set and reset he resolution and display output settings.

Is there something in this connection that is impossible? Specs for the projector are here: http://www.aboutprojectors.com/Epson-EMP-7900-projector.html

I've spent a few hours on boards and can't figure it out.

I'm suspecting an HDCP problem. Is there a way to tell whether the projector is HDCP ok? If it isn't, is there an easy way around it?

thanks for any help!!

I think the fact that you can't find any info on it is telling. The black screen does indeed sound like HDCP, which given that the Epson is a 9-year old high-brightness business/classroom projector, isn't surprising.

Now, given that this is only an XGA projector, with a 16:9 image, the maximum resolution you'll ever see will be 1024x576; not 1080p or even 720p. The projector will support 720p and 1080i as input resolutions, but the maximum you'll see will be 1024x576 - essentially a quarter of the resolution of 1080p.

What I'd probably do is to try one of the cheap HDMI to VGA converters from ebay or Amazon. Just search "VGA HDMI" and you should find a few worth trying for under $20. I wouldn't put too much more money into it than that, as it's not going to look massively better than the composite connector. It should look better, but not like "HD vs SD" better.

Welcome to the forum.

Cheers,
SC

Another thing to confirm is the type of DVI connector. The specs don't mention. It needs to be DVI-D or DVI-I to support digital input. If it's DVI-A (analog only), the HDMI to DVI converter won't work.

Edit: The manual does seem to indicate it's a DVI-D as it talks about being able to use an optional DVI-D to DVI-D cable on page 19, and the specs on page 143 do say DVI-D (see: http://www.aboutprojectors.com/pdf/epson-emp-7900-manual.pdf).

Most likely an HDCP issue then as SC mentioned.
