A large coke here runs $5.50. My favorite one though is how they don't want you to feel like you are buying a normal candy bar for a huge amount of money. So they have large boxes made just for them and sell bite size pieces inside but are the same size as a regular bar after it is all said and done.

I would be perfectly okay with paying the absurdly high price for theater popcorn if I didn't have to wait 15 minutes in line for it. Movie theater concessions is the model of service inefficiency. Part of the problem is the huge menu, with nachos, mini-pizzas, etc.
All I want is a popcorn and a couple of water cups so I enjoy my smuggled in wine.

I fixed your observation for you.
I don't know how many times I've been at the theater, fast food, or wherever and observed an almost comical level of incompetence and inefficiency. Walk over, get water. Fill a popcorn. Walk back and get another water. Walk over and get the candy (that was right on the way back from the water), etc.
And don't even get me started on the personality thing. Yeah, I know… Working a crappy job as a teenager sucks. I was a teenager once, too. But, get over yourself. Your job requires almost no training or experience, and is total cake. All you have to do is fill soda cups, run the popcorn machine, and mop the floors a couple of times a day. You could be working in an un-airconditioned or un-heated factory doing some horribly repetitive manual labor or something. Realize you have it pretty damn good, put a smile on and be friendly, or spare us all and go get a back-room job somewhere you aren't customer-facing.

We're getting old. On the rare occasion we go to the theater, we smuggle stuff in, too. I prefer to be a cheap bastard in some areas of my life so I can be spend more freely in others.

Mr. Green is totally right on the bass. There is something about having one's insides feel like they are exploding that is just not enjoyable.
Good theater is more than being able to hit low frequencies loudly. It takes balanced system to really bring out something really special.
Now if only we could figure out a way to get sticky floors into the home..

I agree, but customers can also suck as well. A lot of people still look over the menu board and can't decide even though they have been looking at it for ten minutes. I was in Popeyes a couple of months ago. A couple in front of me had been looking at the menu for three minutes before getting up to the counter. The wife continues to look over the menu and finally orders after another two or three minutes. The husband is on the phone telling the other person what is on the menu. Another two minutes for that person to order. Finally, the husband has to look over the menu for two or three minutes before ordering. This was the closest I have ever came to saying something to another customer. My problem is that if I had said something I would have probably started yelling. The funny thing was I walked up placed my order with choices quickly and the cashier laughed and said "Someone who knows exactly what they want."

You guys left out the most important part.
Actually getting to see the movie you went to the theater to see: You go through the process of finding a movie you want to see, then finding a theater that is showing it at a time you can make it to, only to find out when you get there, a half-hour early, that it is sold out. And the next best movie is sold out too. So you end up watching some crappy movie, just to keep you from going home empty handed.
You guys also need to include the cost of getting to and from the theater. It's not cheap to get around, a theater ten miles away will cost you around $10.00 to get there and back.
As for popcorn. Just a nice pot/lid. Add enough oil to just cover the bottom, throw in a couple of kernels, high heat, once those pop add the popcorn and pop till the popping starts to slow and turn the heat off.
You add the popcorn when the oil is hot enough to pop the kernels, this helps to pop all the corn. Adding the popcorn when the oil is cold tends to dry out the popcorn before it has a chance to pop, making for more un-popped kernels. Store the popcorn so it does not have a chance to dry out.
Cast iron makes the chances of burning the popcorn less. It also keeps the popped popcorn warmer, that is, if you eat it out of the pot.
To make kettle corn popcorn. Pretty much the same as regular popcorn. Just add sugar to the oil. Enough oil to cover bottom of pot (1/4 cup might be on the oily side), 1/4 cup sugar, 1/4 cup corn. The sugar will burn before the popcorn burns. Keep the heat no higher then you need to get the corn popping.
Deron.

I just went to a local theater this past weekend to see 3 days to kill with Kevin Costner. This theater must have recently upgraded as I saw the "Christie Digital" logo pop up prior to the trailers and the last time I was in the theater it was right after Bow Tie bought out Clearview so alterations were likely in progress.
I sat in the last row of the theater so whether it was 2K or 4K there was no way to see any resolution issues (screen door effect in the case of 2K). The sound was decent but the black level was not very good and there were scene's with quite a bit of crush. Hard to say whether that is the quality of the projection system or the way the film was shot (digital vs. film stock).
In general I find it harder to make comparisons with so many variables. 10-years ago the majority or theaters used film projection and the movies themselves were shot on film stock whereas these days you can have theaters using 35mm, 2K, 4K, Imax projection systems with content shot on any of those (and in some cases mix and match).
The best thing about the theater was the cost- $8/ticket for an evening showing! Tuesday nights are just $6/ticket and in both cases those are prices I haven't seen since the 1990's.

I haven't been to my local theater since the Star Wars episode 1 movie
My main complaints are like everyone else's
Sticky floors
Rude people
Now one thing that does(well did as i haven't been since they went digital) is they had the audio and video quality right for a change
I know it wasn't IMAX but it was not bad
For 6 bucks you could get two tickets either one large or two small popcorn a and two small drinks(free refills on both) if you didn't get the drinks and popcorn tickets was only a doller(don't ask how they have stayed in business so long)
I loved going its just last time I went someone was talking on they're phone even while the turn off cell phones message was on the screen(really wanted to punch the nut out)not to mention the power went out about mid way in the movie :/(sitting in a dark room full of strangers is not cool)
I like good quality audio as well as video hence why I have a crt and infinity speakers(these aren't the budget store junk they make now(these are when they made quality speakers)
Of course we know that no theater is complete without popcorn and drinks I have two popcorn makers(love it)
Though I may be upgrading my seating at some point in the near future as my current couch is not comfy for long movies
The audio is just as important as the video without either you couldn't enjoy the movie
Ps if I ever do go back to my local theater I will report if I like the digital projection provided the ticket prices aren't bad

I just went to see THE WIND RISES last Sunday evening. The film was great, but the projector must have had really bad burn in. Very surprised to see that.
Has anyone ever heard or seen this on a theater projector?

I am going to guess they had a dlp projector if yes then it is possible provided they showed a static image when not showing a movie(I would hate to watch on something like that)

Huh? Of all the digital projection techs, LCD is the most susceptible to burn-in, and even then that takes extreme abuse and is incredibly rare. Because of how DLP works, burn-in in a classic sense is impossible because the mirrors can be only full on or full off - if a mirror malfunctioned, you'd simply get a 0% black or 100% white pixel.

It may seem impossible with a dlp but it is(as crazy as it sounds its true)
Mostly happens with large text where the springs on the mirrors get fatigued from extended periods of displaying the same thing
I went through the dead pixal issue with my Sammy dlp tv(black screen looked like a night sky with the dead pixels stuck on)

Well, we certainly agree on how the malfunction would manifest itself. You won't see the same kind of "afterimage" that you'd see on a CRT or plasma.

Wow, never thought that was possible on a theater projector until I saw it in person. Probably would have rated about a 6 or 5 on the CRT burn in chart. The weird thing was that it was a set of pillars and boxes. Visible on pure whites especially.
Still recommend the film though - gorgeous animation, spectacular backgrounds. THE WIND RISES will certainly be a future CRT demo disk. Definitely worth going to see in the theater

What the hell is a theater???
No, seriously.... I stopped going to the theaters when people got cell phones and lost all manners. Not that screaming babies weren't already bad enough.
Do you REALLY have to bring your brood to an R rated movie?? And they expect me to PAY for that?
Forget it. I'll watch movies at home.

We'll go to a traditional theater tonight...
...to see a live show.
Yesterday we had Faculty for lunch and Rampart for dinner. Show me a cinema in the neighbourhood with that schedule an I probably go there.
Cheers
