Hi,
Before anything else, I wish a happy new year to every member of this forum.
I already possess 4 CRT projectors but I don't use them. Since a few weeks I want to install one in my home-cinema in which I use a digital projector (Panasonic PT-AE700).
I decided to set up my Sony 1272 and its 2900h tubes when someone proposed me a Marquee 8500 with a Moome DVI and YUV card, HD145 lenses and 5000h tubes (a wear rating between 6 and 7 for green, and between 8 and 9 for red and blue) for approximately $300.
I know well that this Marquee is much better than the Sony 1272 and that it isn't expensively sold but I know nothing at all about Marquee projectors. Is it a good choice to begin in the world of CRT projectors? It would be connected to a PCHC, a BD player and maybe to an Optoma scaler and used on a 100" screen.

Yes, the MArquee is the world's most popular video projector, according to the manufacturer. they are easy to set up, reliable (usually!) and will be much better than the 1272.
Check what is called the 'filament voltage' as some of the 8500s had bad power supplies that put up to 8 volts on the filament, wearing the tubes out.
To check that, measure the 2 pin connector under the blue tube housing. It's laballed 'P14', and has two thick black wires going to it. It should read between 6.3 and 6.5 VDC. More than that, and the tubes will wear out quickly.

Thanks a lot for these informations! I will check the voltage before the purchase with your procedure.
The same person sells à Cine 8 Onyx with 3000h tubes for 750$ but it's a bit expensive for me at the moment.
I hope I'll enjoy this Marquee and not regret my digital PT-AE700! I've hesitated to buy a FullHD digital but I want to try a good CRT, even if the setting is more binding and complicated.
I'll post some pics when the Marquee will be mine (in 15 days).

it's not a reason not purchase it, that voltage problem can be fixed. If the machine is 1998 or newer then the problem was fixed at the factory

Ok, thanks for this information.
The machine is 1997 and the chassis number is 38-P13085-95 ("standard" 8500).
If present, is the voltage problem difficult to fix?

it requires taking the low voltage power supply apart, removing the bottom circuit board, and soldering in the correct trim-pot + a resistor. At least that's how I do it for perfect 6.35 volts that doesn't drift

1996 and 1997 were actually the 2 years where the voltage is almost always bad. Electrohome had a free replacement program which lasted for 2 years, so maybe someone switched it but usually no one did until a tube burned out (and sometimes not even after that) Big installations would just keep plugging in new tubes.
It's not a big deal, you can buy an LVPS from me or other people with the problem corrected. Check the machine carefully for dead tubes, all 3 should be too bright to look at.
the LVPS is easy to replace , just 2 screws and it pulls out

Some screws seem missing or am I wrong?

The green isn't perfect but it still has a few thousand hours left on it with acceptable color balance (for most people anyway). Even with that wear on the tube it's a huge step- up from your sony 12XX
