Hi, I rescued a 1080p Toshiba panel from the scrap heap, it doesn't power on AT ALL, no indicator lights, nothing. From my reading, this *can* be a good thing, as there is a fuse in the power board that might blow in the event of a power inconsistency. With the week long ice storm we've had here, power has been on and off all week....

So, I pulled the back off, found the fuse, tested for continuity, got none...

Is there anything I can do to fire the set up without a "proper" fuse in place, just to see if I'm wasting my time or not ?

None of the caps appear bulged, the boards all *look* really good....

BTW, its a Toshiba 40RV525U if that makes any difference, and the fuse is marked on the board as " T 8.0A H/250V"

I'm not much of a "board level repair" guy(can't solder) but the whole power board is available on ebay for under $60., so even if worse comes to worse and I have to replace a whole board, for a 1080p panel, $60. is within reason....

Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks.

Use a 100W incandescent light bulb, if it glows really bright then you have excessive current draw and something else might be wrong. Also look at all capacitors even the Ceramic disc ones. I fixed one a few weeks back that popped a 1000pf 1kv cap.

Thanks for the super quick reply, so I bridge the fuse with an incandescent 100watt light, and if it is VERY bright, I've got things to worry about....

And if it looks "normal" ?

Is it conceivable that this particular fuse could be blown by frequent power outages ?

Correct, mac taught me that one .

And frequent power surges outages could cause the fuse to blow.

Ah, one second here guys. That 100w bulb only works if the fuse is on the AC input line. If it is somewhere else it will not work properly.

I *think* its on the AC input side, its right beside where the power cord connects to the power board....if that means anything....

Can I bridge the fuse connector with a piece of wire or something safely to see if it just turns on ? I mean, at this point, I don't even know if the panel "works" or not....if its got more problems that aren't worth the cost of repair, I'd rather know that now, rather than spend anything and find it out later....

If the fuse is by the power cord connection then it will probably work with the bulb test.

And sure you can bridge the fuse with whatever as long as you have a fire extinguisher and cellphone with 911 entered and button on send for when you plug it in. Well then again maybe someone else holding these other devices in case you get hit with flying debris and can't push the button. Surprised

Sorry, I guess I should have made use of the "bold" options when posting my previous query...

Is there anything I can sub in for a fuse "SAFELY" that will allow me to tell if it will simply turn on/function ???hahahaha

Thanks again for the advice, much appreciated.

Yes and yes...

All the caps look great, flat tops, no bulges top OR bottom....

Addendum: Is there a fuse on a common NEC/Marquee/Barco projector board I can rob to put in place of the blown one ? I was going through my "pile" and realized I had quite a few projector boards I would never use again....

Yes you can rob a fuse from those boards. It does not have to be white either. It can be clear glass. Just make sure it is at least 8 amp. It can be higher for testing but not lower. Just remember, if it does work ok with a test fuse make sure you later get the correct fuse.

Ok, so I found a 15amp/250v fuse in a Barco board, tested it good for continuity, put it into the flat panel socket, plugged it in, and blew it immediately....

So I guess I need a new power board for this flat panel ???

A shame you can not solder. It probably only blew the MOV. You could just clip it out and test. I think it is marked on the board as DS101 or something close. Do you have a DMM?

This is a close up of the board from a forum where someone else had the same problem: http://www.badcaps.net/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=67957&d=1375108665

If, after you click on the thumbnail, you click right on the photo, you can see if full sized, which allows viewing of all labels much easier than in person....I have to use one of those funky "lab" magnifiers with the built in light to see anything, hahahah
