The first Thing I plan to try is copying the EEPROM to a new one since it could be that the old one can't be read when it gets warm. Is there anything in the EEPROM other than the point data?

So, I did some additional cleaning, and installed jumpers through some vias that looked questionable and now it doesn't work even when cold. I think I might be on the right track and there was a open via or two that were connected only by leakage. Now that things have been thoroughly cleaned there's no leakage to bridge the connection.
I guess I'll check all the data and address lines between the EEPROM, EPROM, and SRAM with the CPU. If that doesn't turn anything up, I'll be in the market for a gently used point board. Without an extender, there's really no way to work on the board while it's running.

I repaired a number of bad vias and traces on the point board, and now point convergence is operating again. It's intermittently shutting down with an F8 (convergence) error, so I'm still not finished.

Well, I've been over the point board. and I can't find out what's causing the shutdown problem. On the off chance that it's caused by corrupted point EEPROM data, how do I completely clear it? I've tried hitting "normal" and "ctrl+normal" but my point adjustments remain intact.
Alternately, does anyone have a point board I could buy? I just want to get this thing back together.

Depends on the remote you have, CTRL+Normal is meant to do it, but its different on different remotes if youre not using the one intended for that machine.
I have a heap that don't work....
I don't know how many working ones I have.

If you don't have a working one, I'd take a few non-working ones if the price is right. Based on my experience with this one, it seems that the leaking caps tend to damage the vias near the caps. I'm not sure what happened to my board to cause the F8 error, but it's probably a fluke.
It happens even if point is disabled, but not if I pull the card. There's no visible problem with the picture the instant before it shuts down. What does the protection circuit even look for for convergence? Is there a way to temporarily disable convergence protection?
My remote is RC-6321.

F8 code is triggered by overload (undervoltage and over current) on the C-drive main supply line. So your point board probably still have an intermittent problem somewhere. The output of the point board goes through the Wave board, even with disabled point there is some problem with the point output that leaks in the convergence signal.

Pull the point board, set DMM to diode scale and test for close to short across C8854, C8855, C8860 and C8865.

No shorts there, but as I said, the point board appears to work fine until the F8 error. From a cold start it will run for about 10 minutes before shutting down. If I power it back up it only lasts about 30 seconds until it shuts down again.
I will check out the convergence supplies for any problems.

I'd guess some sort of oscillation is coming from the point board that may not be apparent on the screen, yet overloading the C-drive. Check the SM there are 6 outputs of the point board, namely RHPO (Red Horizontal Point Output, and so on) to BVPO you may want to check them with an oscilloscope, them just solder some flying wire to them so you dont nedd the extender.

Then on a cold start while it will stay running you need to go into the main convergence menu and manually neutral out "ALL" settings. Then go into the point menu and manually neutral out "ALL" settings. Even neutral the main shift setting's.
The F8 failure is not triggered from the point board, it is triggered from the convergence board. If the convergence board is being strained it will trigger the F8.
After you neutral all settings see if it will stay running with the point both off and on. Then we will see where to look.

I want to go ahead and just replace the point board to start with. While it may not be the problem, it will be a huge time saver to eliminate it before I dig deeper into the projector. The fact that the point board was working flawlessly until it developed a thermal intermittent, and that I didn't get the first F8 error until after I attempted to repair the board makes me think the point board is the only problem. I don't think I'm overloading the convergence because I get the F8 error with the point board installed even if its disabled.
So, does anyone (preferably in the US) have a point board they can part with. I'll consider fixer uppers as long as the price is right.

Yes you are right 100% sure the point board causes the F8, but you have to understand that the F8 is triggered by overload on the convergence board. The point board works paralelly with the normal convergence controls thus the convergence drive board is the executor of all point commands so the F8 is a result of a point board malfunction, and even when the point board is disabled it gets powersupply and obviously the opamps on the board aren't shut down, so it CAN output a signal that kicks in the F8 trigger.
I just wrote this see the things clear, and I agree repairing a point board is more like a fun project than an economically worthy doing.

I just installed a replacement point board from Curt, and I'm happy to say everything is working properly again.
