just took the kids ot go see this, it was awesome. At first I was annoyed at paying the extra $3.50 per person for 3D but it didn't hurt the movie and you could say some things warranted 3D. I usually find 3D an annoying distraction but The claustrophobic environment of space vehicles in general were really conveyed well with 3D. I wish I had gone to an Imax, but I think that's like $15. per person?
If you go, go to matinee or any time where your most likely to get a small (quiet) audience. This is NOT your typical loud, crashing booming movie, I think that's why I liked it. They took a huge chance to try and present something as accurately as possible and it really payed off. There is no sound in space, so a quiet environment is really important to complete the experience they're conveying.
I'm thinking Oscar on this one, at least for best picture, or best cinematography if not best actress.
Might go catch Enders game tomorrow, read the book in high school and again about a year ago, weird coincidence but good timing.

My buddy saw it a few weeks ago in LA in the Dolby Atmos theater, so 3D with the Atmos audio. I think tickets were just about $20, but he said it was amazing. He said the movie was pretty decent, too.
I'm a bit of a Sandy Bullock fan, so I'm kind of looking forward to this one.

I just saw this in digital IMAX 3D and was somewhat disappointed (by the projection at least) we were in the dead center of the 4th row, and the pixels were quite noticeable, the motion was terrible, and one of projector's was clearly out of convergence. Though the sound was kick-ass and the 3D was good as well. For the movie: It was ok, except for one major trip, but oh well it's Hollywood
But now I really appreciate my CRT even if it's only a NEC PG xtra.

Totally. I'm on book three now and the books are rather amazing. The Ender's game movie just went through the motions of the book in a shorthand version with poor choices for editing the story line. The movie had no emotion or depth compared to the book. My wife liked the movie better than I did, but she wasn't thrilled wither. She thought they did a pretty good job.
This is totally the opposite for the Hunger games trilogy so far. The books and the movies go together with the Hunger Games and Catching fire. The books make those two movies better and make the books feel more real. I just don't know who the will get to replace Philip Seymour Hoffman in the final Hunger Games movie now that he has passed RIP.

we just watched gravity. wish sandra bullock had been hit with debris along with cloony at the beginning. the end, 13 minutes in. save all the long drawn out piffle. was seriously expecting some hobbits to be on the chinese space station, it so reminded me of peter (i'm gonna make 358 hour movies) jacksons meandering, pointless, turds of late.

I watched Gravity at home a couple weeks ago and then again last night with the wife and a friend. We all thought it was really awesome. I think it's sure a movie that should be watched in 3D. It was the first 3D movie ever for our friend and she loved it.

SC | I think you'll appreciate it as the father/son team who made it are really visionary film-makers IMO. I heard their interview and my first thought was " why don't we have more film-makers like this?"
The answer is that it's a little too Cerebral for the average movie-goers. Like Oblivion, it didn't do well with American audiences which respond well to 6th grade plot lines, little or no dialogue, and just lots of shooting.
I'm also looking forward to Edge of tomorrow this summer, although time-travel plot-lines are usually a mess. This one sounds interesting though, Ground Hog's day meets Start-ship troopers
Also looking forward to at least one more movie to finish off the Prometheus series, looks like 2015 for that one.
Anybody know of more anticipated Sci-fi for this year, I'm getting really stoked about how popular the Genre has become.

Got the movie yesterday and watched it last night, part of it in 3D. Very impressive and if nothing else, if they don't win at least the best special effects, I will be very surprised. They apparently used a cutting edge system that had never been used before to simulate weightlessness, almost like "puppets on strings" and by far, the most realistic that I have ever seen in a space movie. A relatively simple story, however, Sandra Bullock was great and, in my opinion, it's worth buying just for the action, sound and visuals alone.

How did the weightless scenes compare to Apollo 13?

In my mind, no comparison. With many scenes in Gravity, the astronauts were outside of the spacecraft which is where these special effects really shone and very realistic, yet, they were ALL done completely on a sound stage in London, U.K. Lots of extras on the disc that goes in to detailed explanation as to how all this was developed. From what I understand and in order to provide some reality, with Apollo 13 and many other space films before and after, the weightless scenes were done on that specially equipped aircraft that took them up to high altitude and then went in to a steep dive where they experienced maybe 30 seconds or so of uncontrolled weightlessness repeated over and over to get the required number of scenes filmed.
I believe, once you see the movie, you will get my drift.

I built a device that flew on the Comet about 10 years ago. Not something I would ride on, I get car sick, this thing does 40 Parabolas (porpoise dives), in one flight. They have a Doctor on board because Some people get so sick the doc. just gives them drugs and sends them to the back of the plane, where presumably the motions are less.
I've read that weightlessness is even worse, some people are so sick it incapacitates them.

I was mesmerized by this movie for whatever reason, Just glued to the screen from beginning to end. Very few movies I can say that about. I can't wait to see what these 2 Spanish dudes do next

SPOILER ALERT - DO NOT READ THE SMALL TEXT IN THIS POST IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE
Well, we watched it last night. I wasn't nearly as impressed as I hoped. Based on the descriptions, I was expecting something like Moon, Sunshine, or Oblivion. It wasn't bad, but I didn't like it as much as any of those other sci-fi films.
First, the good:
The music and sound editing were very good. The opening sequence and early part of the film were excellent in this regard. The only thing that ever bugged me was when they had Clooney playing his country song over the comm, then also laid the soundtrack music over the top simultaneously. Made me want to stab my ears to make it stop. I'm pretty sensitive, though. Otherwise, the audio was excellent. Nicely done.
The visual effects were absolutely gorgeous. Rich and colorful. Crazy, super-sharp. Most of the physics in the collisions, particle destruction… Excellent. Nothing at all negative to say. Beautifully done.
Now, the negative:
I felt like they "Hollywooded" it - totally unnecessarily. The one scene that really took me out of the story and ruined it for me was Clooney cutting himself loose because there was some magical gravitational force pulling on him, but somehow not pulling on anything else. Why do they have to do stuff like that? Why the contrived melodrama for something that is plenty dramatic on its own. It's a pivotal moment in the movie. I get the metaphor… But, just have their hands miss, and he floats away slowly. That would have been more excruciatingly dramatic than the tangled parachute cords and bravado.
Next, the actors. I think for stories like this, the producers really do themselves a disservice using big names like Clooney and Sandra Bullock. I like both those actors, but for stories like this, where I want full immersion and suspension of disbelief, I keep seeing George Clooney and Sandy Bullock - not their characters. Takes me out of the story.
Overall, not a bad film, but not great. I give it a B-minus, and only because of the beautiful effects. If it wouldn't have been for the effects, I would have given it a C.
Definitely worth watching, but not nearly as good as it could have been.
