My Barco data 808s is not working properly. The display became dim, so dim that I can barely see the picture. This occurs not only thru whatever source selected but also while in the ADJ mode. I tried the various ports, s-video directly plugged in with a DVD player resulted in no image displayed. Port 4 gave me a dim image thru my DVD - Onkyo receiver - HD -Fury 5 bnc connection. Port 5 with that same connection appeared bright and seemingly without issues for the time I was checking the ports, but when I went back to port 5 once checking my computer connection thru the Extron setup which gave no image, port 5 also became dim like the rest of the ports. Also I did not see the blue tube go on at any point of my checking the ports even when the image was dim. Please offer all suggestions on what may have gone wrong and/ or what else I can check to further pinpoint the problem. I hope to resolve this while projector is still hanging as it is always a chore to pull it down, drive to the only repair shop in Miami that works on Barcos and remount once again. Also costs of repair vs replacement with a digital projector also would be considered if it becomes that. I have had Barco CRT projectors since 1986 so switching to a digital won't come easy to me, the film like image has always been the stumbling block though admittily I have not had an audience with any of the latest digital projectors out now and financially I will need to limit my choice to $2500.00 if I end up going that route. That leaves me a little apprehensive in getting a satisfactory digital projector.

These sets are modular, there's no need to take it off the ceiling, or spend insane amounts of money. this is all a do it yourself thing.

A very important question: Is the picture still in focus, even though it's really dim?

Your problem is most likely HV quadrupler or G2 board related. it could also be a problem in the video path, or video boards, but I doubt it. A bad G2 board or a bad HV quadrupler will cause what you're describing. The layout of the 808 is here:

oh, and I can get your Barco going for 1/10 of the cost of a new digital.

Yes the picture is in focus. Should I open the case and look for red lights on these boards or is that not done on the boards you think could be bad.

The problem you are experiencing cannot be repaired by a layman, sorry! The red LEDs won't help in this case, and unless you have component repair knowledge and things like high voltage probes, I highly recommend that you send me the boards stated to test and repair.

Since you are now talking about high voltage components I will have to see if my installer will drop buy to remove the boards, I have ZERO electronics knowledge so I'm not comfortable being anywhere near high voltage parts. In the photo you included there are two items that have a G2 label, one is G 2 high voltage and the other is G2 diagnostic. Which of these two boards did you need?

There is no HV in the set when it's off. Completely safe to disconnect yourself, just pull the power cord and wait 5 minutes before putting fingers in the set. I need both of those boards, plus the HV quadrupler underneath the HV/G2 board. Email me at curtpalme at shaw.ca and we can discuss price, etc.

thanks!

I removed the main case cover only to find that there are more panel covers inside the case. Do you have a exploited view of removing the aluminium panels that cover the internal boards? Which panels do I need to remove? Which nuts/bolts/ screws do I need to remove or loosen to get these panels off? Sorry for such basic instructions needed I haven't done this before.

There are three screws on each side of the panel which is hinged in the forth screws counting from the back of the projector. Once you have undone the six screws you can flip open the panel and access all parts.
