|
|
Hi all,
I tried to figure this one out with google, but I am not getting anywhere.
I have a 1209 here that I got recently and have had on the bench to take care of coolant leaks without ever powering it up. It was reported working when I picked it up, but had not been used in some time. About 15k hours on the chassis, but the R and B tubes perfectly clean and the G is very close (probably not original?). I have had an 808 for about a decade and have been all over in it, so I have some experience.
The coolant leaks were very minor, but made me nervous, so I decided to get them under control right away. Swapped for colored C elements while I was at it.
I got finished cleaning up and powered it up. It took longer than I expected to get the raster up (15 seconds?), then when the raster finally came up there was a lot of high pitched chirping and intermittent high voltage hissing and stuff. The image of the menu flicked in and out, sometimes fading out, sometimes losing focus and spreading out before dropping, sometimes with crackly lines and speckles in it. Green and red came in and out in unison. No blue on the menu, so I am not sure what it would have been doing.
I turned it off immediately and got to where I could see the diagnostic lights. Powered up one more time for a few seconds to see what they said. Counting from the front of the machine, all lit and green except the 4th and last leds were blinking on and off randomly, in unison, at about 2 or 3 hz, in time with a fairly quiet very high pitched chirp from over by the H shift board somewhere, and some high voltage hissing building and fading, and the 9th led is red and seemed to go off when the blinking two were on. Also have a flickering (much more quickly) error light on the control board console.
Tried reseating boards and dusting out with compressed air with no luck. I didn't see any burning on any boards.
Seems to me like it is having trouble getting high voltage up and stable, but I am just guessing and don't know what to do from there. I am very comfortable with a volt meter, but don't have an o scope available these days. Any ideas?
Thanks very much in advance,
Mike

Also, or alternatively, if anyone has or knows where to find a service manual for this thing, I would appreciate the lead.

1209 or 1209s ? Are any wires possibly pinched anywhere going to the controller ? Are there any Red LEDs lit up and check for a Red LED on the EHT module.

It does sound more like an HIV issue than anything else. Disconnect the hv leads going to the tubes one at a time to see if you can get rid of the shaking. Also connect a signal source as it will be easier to see problems than with the internal barco menus.

Hey all, thanks for the suggestions. I tried removing each high voltage lead one at a time and starting up, I saw no difference in how it behaves. Also tried connecting a video source and can't see that it is any different.
I made a video of it powering up. You might have to turn it up a bit to hear the chirping.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJJ_sMmqAjM&feature=youtu.be
This is with a video source. It rarely achieves the high voltage crackle up front, just some fainter electrical hissing in the back. Usually it either settles in without high voltage like it does at the end of this video, or finally gets rolling, does the high voltage crackle up front, projects for a few seconds, then comes apart again losing high voltage and returning to this cycling.
Any thoughts? Maybe I should order a board or two from Curt and swap out?
Thanks again everyone!

I'd recommend that you send me:
-main power supply.
-G2 board
-H board
-V board.
The problem can be on any one of those boards based on what the LEDs are doing. Shoot me an email to curtpalme at shaw.ca
Cheers!
