Does it sparkle like a Black Diamond?

Geez, are we stilll debating this???? thought we stopped the digital vs CRT threads ages ago. Smile

I have to say, I've watched Cliff's BenQ single chip DLP for about 3 hours so far, and his stack about 4. while I can see rainbows on the BenQ, they were not really objectionable. For casual viewing and viewing static images, it's acceptable. Now, while Cliff was adjusting it, the lens shift assembly broke. I have a pix that I'll use for reference in my avatar that shows duct tape around the year old projector to hold it in place. Smile

Now, Ken and Cliff opened the set, and even Ken laughed as we saw a massive plastic shroud around a tiiiiny little lens in the middle of the set. It was a simple fix, and it was back to life within an hour.

black levels- good, but far from the stack of course. there's STILL something about a CRT projector(s) that blows away digital. We watched Pacific Rim on the stack last night, and while Cliff's room is suffering from a lack of bass, those CRTs made that movie rock. *

There's also seemingly some kind of glitch in the BenQ, as it wasn't saving the calibration the way Ken was wanting it to be, but it may be 'user error'. He's waiting for a call back from BenQ to find out what's going on.

Long story short, we're still doing CRT because we can, and because the pricing on the $60K sets are down to a fraction of that. I personally wouldn't spend what Cliff did on the BenQ, but it was better than I expected based on what I've seen of single chip DLPs in the past. If I had to go digital, I'd go JVC I think. Or, in 5 years I'd buy a used 4K projector for $1000.00.

frankly, given the longevity of CRT chassis, I don't know that I'll ever have a digital on the ceiling. After I'm dead, it really won't matter what anyone else does. Smile

*I am totally kidding about the lack of bass at Cliff's place. It's over the top insane.

Sounds like you guys are having a great time wish I could have been there!!!!

Pacific Rim is a kickass fun movie for massive subs and deep deep blacks that only CRT can give. I bet the stack
did that movie proud!!!

When Cliff brought the BQ here to my place I was really impressed with its ease of lighting up the 13 foot screen and its colors
but the blacks, sorry Cliff not for me. But for a TV viewing and gaming unit it do fine in my theater and "cough cough" I have been browsing digitals just for that.

I've been thinking about a digital projector lately primarily because I'm interested in 3D and doing a CIH setup. A blend is too expensive as I'm on a tight budget and all. Besides I simply love my Marquee 8500 with the Hd145 lenses. It throws a beautiful picture and has been incredibly reliable for the over 5yrs I've had it. No doubt a digital would make things easier setup wise but I'm still up in the air. I'm about to pull the trigger on a couple of 6pg xtras just for backup:)

Do both like Cliff does. Each technology is good for certain things. For casual use, use the digital, and for gaming. CRT for movies and realism.

I'm not much of a gamer. My son would love a setup like that though. Do you think I should get the 6pg xtra? The tubes are pristine on it.

In fact, forget about the 90's and just look at the past 6-years. With the advent of HD sources the prices have dropped drastically for all projection technologies and the overall improvement in image quality has been astounding.

Exactly.

It was about 6-7 years ago that I put together this page that advertised a blend system for Tim:

We now have the technology to project stunning highly detailed and very bright images from CRTs using a special switcher/scaler/processor called BlendZilla. Sources can be HDTV satellite, DVD, HTPC, XBox 360, and other high quality signals fed through this processor and pairs of CRT projectors onto screens nine feet and wider. E-Tech will bundle the BlendZilla processor with retubed or new 8500 or 9500LC Marquees for systems ranging from $33,000 to $90,000 (USD) and assist in providing skilled installation almost anywhere. The projectors will display a left 60% and a right 60% of 16:9 using seamless overlap at 1024p for unparalleled image punch and detail.

A recent visitor had this to say: "As far as light output is concerned, even with a unity gain screen at 107" wide, the picture had a vast dynamic range. The projectors brightness was set in the low 40's for all viewing as there was absolutely no need for more light output. Subjectively, I would not hesitate using a 120" wide screen with this setup. I looked into all 6 tubes and it was a refreshing feeling to see the entire height and width of the raster being used!"

$33-90K for a nice picture on a 107" screen? That seems like an absolutely insane amount of money today, which is the whole point of what the author of the article in question (Thomas Norton) was getting at.
