Ok people, name Joe Patino have questions for members of this board, who are more knowledgeable and wiser then I am about crt's. As I am a total newbie. I have a Toshiba rear projection tv. built in 1996, I have had it for 17 yrs. now this tv is bright, with real good colour, but it is an 480p. it is sharp and clear. Will any of the 9 inchers be any brighter, sharper. with good colour, then my tv.? I have alreay talked to Mr. Palme, but this is one ? I didn't asked. Can anybody give me an answer? what kind of ft.l does an 1200 lumen crt projector display? I thank you'all in advance for your help. joe Patino.

In order to estimate the on screen luminance (in FTL) you need 3 parameters:
1) Projector light output
2) Screen dimensions
3) Screen gain

A rear-projection TV is beaming the light straight at you. Front projectors bounce it off a screen, which is generally less efficient. There's a fair chance your rear-pro used a "lensing" effect to focus the light -- was it dimmer if you stood up or walked to the side? A high-gain projection screen will produce a similar effect, but many people don't like the "hot-spot" effects &etc you get with high gain (similar to what you got with your lensing rear-pro).
The rear-pro screen is, what, maybe 40-50" diagonal? Shoot a 9" projector onto a screen that size and you'll need sunglasses. Most of us prefer larger screens (in the 90-150" range diagonal) and that means you are spreading the same light over a much larger area ==> dimmer image.
With the small screen and lensing effect, you could probably watch your TV in a fully lit room. You usually watch a projector in a dark room, because the large screen's image is dimmer. (You wouldn't watch a movie at the cinema in a fully-lit room either, for the same reason.)
Though actually if you shot a projector onto a 50" screen, you might be able to watch it OK in a lit room. It would be 4x brighter than with a 100" screen so it would mostly overwhelm the room light just like your rear-pro does. You wouldn't get as much contrast, because the screen can't go "black" if ambient light is shining on it -- but to be honest, direct-view and rear-pro screens don't go "black" either. Their gray just LOOKS black because everything else is so bright. In a dark room, a properly-set-up projector setup can go nearly dead black. A lot of CRT-o-holics really love that true black.
A properly-set-up 9" will easily handle 1080p, so it will definitely be sharper than your Toshiba.
So you have to decide things like: are you OK with watching in a dark room? Do you want a big screen or are you happy with your small screen? Do you want to take on a bit of a "hobby" as opposed to "plug it in and turn it on" ?

OPV. Corvetteman, garyfritz. Thanks for your reply, appreciate it. Garyfritz, the screen on my Toshiba measures, 56" dia. and no, I don't mind fiddling with it as long as I don't have to do it every day. I have a totally blacked out room. thanks

You don't have to fiddle much mate, its not much different to the rear pro CRT you have. Once you've got it set up it is only minor adjustments from time to time, which your rear pro will also require.

Nashou66: My location, Houston Texas. As for brightness, as bright as I can get it. Money wise, up to 1,000 - 3,500. Just a little more info. the room is a 32 x 16. But I would like a quiet proj.I really appreciate all the info. you're providing, it is really helpful Between the Marquee 9500lc and Sony G90, which has the better reliability, and which one throws a better picture?

Both are great PJ's the Marquee a little bit quieter but both can be made to be more quite. Or you can add a hush box.
that is almost the same dimensions as my room!! mine is 15.5 x 30.
For that you might be able to find a fairly good Sony but more likely a marquee. There is a marquee for sale right now on Videogon. I has many upgrades to and a bunch of spare parts at a really decent price. Id snatch that up if Already didnt have a crap load of PJ's.

Nashou66 No, not yet. Can't decide between an crt or digital. Need a pj that will light up a 10 ft. wide screen. Are there any crt's that can do it? Can the g90, or Marquee 9500 do it? If neither of them can, then I am afraid I'll have to go digital. Any recommendations? Like the smoothness, the long tube life, the black floor of the crt, but a screen of smaller size would make my ht look out of balance. joe

You'd have to get two CRts. Cliff in Chicago (overclkr is his name here) has a g90 stack on a 10' wide screen. One g90 (or any other 9" set will do it), but two gives it that kick!

it depends on the room, and how bright you want it. My Room is Pitch black so I for the longest time used a single 8500 on a 12 foot screen, it did about 4 lamberts, so for me a 9500 on a 10 foot would be super bright!
But it depends on your lighting situation. if you plan to have no light while watching movies than go for it.

Curt, I am totally new to pj's, wouldn't know where to begin to put a stack together, or what it would take to maintain it. I can just about put things together if I have a manual, or some kind of instructions, if I can read it I can just about do it. Joe

Nashou66, My room is just about complete, and like yours, it will be a total bat cave. If I can get at least 6-7ftlamberts I'll be happy. What do you think I might get out of the 9500 on a 10ft screen? Thanks Nashou66 for all the info, really appreciate it. Joe
