I have inherited a Tascam 38. I want to use it to back up my SACD and DVD-A collection. Yeah, I know there are other ways to do this but I always did want to have a big honkin' reel to reel in my theater so this should be fun.
It came with 8 tapes (7 8 channel and 1 Master) as well as the DBX filters. I was able to get it to work while the seller was here, but 5 minutes after he left the capstan stopped spinning so I am kind of screwed right now. I hope it isn't burnt up.
Anyway, if I have to dump some $$ into it so what. It will be fun to own and looking forward to getting it in working condition.

Ordered. Thanks. I did notice the capstan spindle is not "freely" spinning, I have to play with it to go both ways (it's not turning at all by itself) so will be interesting to dig in deeper.

UPDATE It is in fact the capstan belt I'm a happy camper now! just have to finish taking this thing apart to change it. There is a little bitty alan bolt on the pitch control knob of course I have no tools to fit it so have to wait a bit for the neighbor. Cant wait to get this thing up and running!

Man big dog, I didn't realize it would sound THAT GOOD. Freaking awesome!
Now to clean it up and try to get those channels working properly. After tweaking a bit I actually got 5 of the 6 channels working that I will be using so I am close. I'm sure when Curt get's here he will have it singing in no time as well
