I wear glasses as well, and experience shifting colors(chromatic aberration). It's most noticeable on specific types of displays, especially CRT Projection. I stand up close to the screen with glasses removed to converge. It has to do with how the light reflects from ones glasses to ones eyes, and possibly something with the distance between your glasses and eye. I have an el cheapo SLR lens that can be bad with chromatic aberration, but luckily it can be corrected via software, too bad my eyes can be corrected with software too.

Well last week after dinner with Curt and Phil, Curt mentioned I should return to the eye doctor and get my contacts checked. I did and he gave me Ciba Airoptix for Astig. They seemed to be a lot better than the other ones. For the most part, I hardly feel them. My problem is my vision will get blurry. It is almost blink to blink type thing. I dropped my eyes, so I don't think it is dry eyes. I was thinking of trying out several brands of contacts. Any suggestions on a place to get some?

I'd go back to a good eye doctor, Spanky. Most of them have a good selection of sample contacts to do some test fitting to see how they'll work out, and it shouldn't cost anything other than the appointment. Call him up and tell him you're having issues, and you want to try some different brands for optimal fit. That way, he can make sure he has your size(s) and prescriptions. Otherwise you'll be buying boxes of something and trying one for weeks.

Sounds like they're not staying put, like they're moving out of position, or getting air under them. Either way, you need to try a different size or brand to get rid of the blurry thing.

I don't remember what brand I'm using now, but they're daily disposables... I use a peroxide solution nightly to clean them so I can wear them about a week or so, then throw them away, so I never worry about deposits or discomfort anymore. They're a little thin, so harder to handle, but as a side benefit, I think they're more comfortable for longer hours. $150 or so for a 3-month supply lasts me well over a year. Wink

Sounds more like they are drying out to me, try taking them out when they do get that way, soak them in Opti-Free Replenish for about an hour, then put them back in, if they give you 1-2 hours more of comfortable wearing, id say they are drying out.

Its not the eyes going dry, its the lenses dehydrating that was an issue for me.

Hey Craig, did you get your low-index spex yet? How are they working out for you?

Well I just got a new prescription and ordered a pair of glasses with CR39 from Zenni to try it out. If I like them than I may get a higher end set for normal wearing. It feels weird to order glasses from Zenni for $30 shipped when I normally pay around $600+ for a pair with high index high, Abbe polycarbonate, with fancy AR coatings. I am really curious how these work out.

One thing I didn't really realize until I dug up that info for you -- the AR coatings are really only necessary for the high-index plastics. Something about the optical properties of the higher-index plastics causes more surface/internal reflections, so you end up with "foggy" vision e.g. driving at night or, I imagine, looking at test patterns in a dark HT. The AR coating helps with that, but the low-index plastic like CR39 doesn't need it. I haven't bothered with an AR coating in many years.

Wow, thanks for the heads-up on Zenni!!! My glasses are now going on 15 years old; they're getting pretty scratched up, and my prescription has changed a few clicks in both eyes, so I really wasn't relishing the thought of spending $250 on a new pair. Imagine my surprise when I looked at the Zenni site and saw glasses for $40. Holy sheep sh*t!

From looking at the reviews, the quality sounds very good… Most of the bitching seems like it's mostly to do with it taking a couple of weeks for people to get orders. Judas priest, what do you expect?

It does look like they've raised their prices significantly, as I saw YouTube reviews where people were talking about paying $10-15/pair back in 2009 and 2010, which is completely insane.

I've always wondered why glasses had to be so expensive. I knew their had to be huge margins with prices like that.

At <$50, I can justify being a pair of glasses every couple of years instead of hanging on to the same damn pair for 15 years with an out-of-date prescription.

I love the internet!!! Twisted Evil

Thanks, Craig!!!

We have bought lots of glasses from zenni. We have no problems. The only headache is getting the size right which is part of your prescription but you have to ask for it. The doctor doesn't like to give it out as he knows whats up. We buy many pairs at a time to save on shipping, I have a pair of prescription sunglasses in every car. The cost was less than 12 bucks a pair last time we bought them. We have insurance that pays for one pair of glasses every 2 years, the rest we buy from zenni. We had a big problem with the last glasses we got from the eye doctor because they didn't have AR coatings on them. They were downright dangerous. Not an exaggeration at all. DANGEROUS. Especially at night. I was wondering how an expensive set from zenni was as we only buy the cheap ones, I hope craig comments when he gets them as I am very curious.

Mine came from Spec Savers and cost me $59 AUD, no coating on them, but chromatic aberation is pretty ordinary.

I looked at Zenni and a couple of others. I was going to try out eyebuydirect, as they were one of about five places that received high marks. They have a pair of glasses that I liked for around $30 tricked out.

Yeah, that is why I was kind of telling the guy I went to that I was less concerned about the exam price. I know they are trying to make it up with their glass prices. My exam was still expensive, but it was comprehensive. The doctor I went to mentioned getting an exam every year or so. Does it need to be that frequent?

You may not need a prescription change that often, but they say you should get checked for glaucoma every year or so.

I saw that on the wiki link that you sent as well. I'm not sure what to believe on that one. I suspect that a CR39 with a coating may still be better. I will say that my ultra high end high abby high index lenses have premium coatings and I still see double lights at night. Like a green arrow on a traffic light will have a double vision on each lens (still see double even if I close one eye). I now suspect this may be from the "high quality" lenses. I am so looking forward to the new glasses with the CR39 because I really want to see if there is a difference.
