How do you update the firmware?

It's a chip on the controller.
s-boards = s-firmware
Original boards = original firmware
With some luck you can find a 808 partout and score the boards + controller.
You might also need a convergence driver. S-firmware requires the newer driver (my 1995 808 has the newer revision)
There is a real difference between the original and S boards.

I think that Sony's tubes and 180DVB's are almost equivalent.
So I would choose the set in the best conditions.
If you want to insert Sony's tubes in BG808 you must to use the tube's mounts because they are different. You can use his 120mhz neckboards instead 75Mhz stock neckboards (I think without perceptible improvements in this conditions). Finally you must use a SMPS board from 808s because it have a trimmer for filaments voltage (that is different than 180dvb's).
If you want use Sony's 120Mhz neckboards in the stock 180dvb's tubes you - MUST - mod the pinouts. The projector will works but without perceptible improvements (I think).
For really improvement you can try the CONVERSION BG808 ---> BG808s
The conversion is possible replacing ...
- RGB Input board (R762719)
- RGB Driver board (R762720)
- Convergence driver 808s version (same p/n R762518 but really different).
- Software v7.xx instead v6.xx

Changing boards sounds much easier than changing tubes! I like that idea. I'm a little scared of adjusting the tube magnetics as it I've read that can be really tricky. Which board has the v7.xx software? Is that the new version of the R762518? I might try modifying the printouts of the 120 neck boards with the stock tubes just to see if there are any improvement. Anyone have a schematic or photo showing which wires to switch? Any benefit of trying to change output from 1080i to 1080p once the above mods are completed. I can't get the stock 808g to sync at 1080p.

No ... new version of convergence driver board is a different physical board, you must find one.
The eprom with software is located in the controller board (into the cover of the boards section).
The convergence driver board R762518 is located in the convergence tray (below tubes).

No schema of mod, is very difficult to show the mod with pictures.
You can make pinout mod seeing the various pinout's schemas.

V7.xx firmware is on the control board.
1080p will be soft but you might like it you should at least try it, 1080i should look sharper.

which board does the RGB Driver replace? I don't see any part labeled the same. Attached is Barco's part list for the 808G

You need to replace R7617481 RGB Switcher and also R7621745 RGB Sync or driver board

On the RGB Driver there are two plugs for "To Contrast Modulation Option Module" and "To BCL Link Option Module". I assume these are for optional boards and are not required?

Yes those are options and not required.

I think I got everything hooked up. My only other question is where to plug 3 wires in on the Convergence Driver. The new one has a Convergence on Green Board. My old board does not. Do I want to keep the Convergence on Green Board? What does it do?
Are the 3 wires moved to the locations shown in the photo? The old graphics 808 board is on the left, the new graphics 808S is on the right.

The COG board uses some of those connectors and yes you want the COG as it allows green convergence adjustment for perfect alignment.
Do you have a manual to better help with those connection.

I don't have the 808S manual but I found this (I have an 808 manual):
http://www.curtpalme.com/docs/BarcoConvergenceOnGreen_Install.pdf
From old 808 I moved J613 to J806, J612 to J808, J601 to J807. I assume the J numbers match on the 808 convergence driver and 808S convergence driver. The manual doesn't clarify which model the instructions are for but I assume it doesn't matter since the J numbers appear to match.

also on the RGB driver there where two inputs which appear to share the same designation "From Controller". I only have one plug from the controller and it only fits one of the two connectors labeled so I plugged it in slot that fits. Does anything go in the second input which I have no cable?

I remember that are three "inputs".
One is "from controller" and is the bigger than other. One is "from port3". The third ... don't remember.

In terms of convergence I believe the trays are the same right through the 808 series.

There is only one cable from the controler and as you have noticed it only fits one connector. There is also a connector from port 3 board and another that's not used.
