A "nearly 100% MTF" as you put it, isn't desirable to everyone.
There is such a thing as "too sharp" you know.
Why you are asking about MTF is beyond me. It just seems like you are scraping the bottom of a barrel looking at ways to point fingers further, and throw more mud.
I may not have had my account for long here, but the tension you and Diddern have been creating against CRT owners, with your almighty digital hailing is pretty unnerving, and almost enough to get me to stop paying attention to most of the discussion here.

I am not the one who started this tread.
What is too sharp? To me there is nothing more sharp than my eyesight and as long as there is not added sharpness like edge enhancement and it looks natural like when I see real things with my own eyes in real life. To mee a digital is more like what I see in real life and a CRT is very soft compared and as long as the digital does not add sharpness it is better. But there is a lot more to a good picture than sharpness and the old CRT tech is falling behing in every aspect.
When we will see a 2 or 6 chip DLP or any other digital tech we will see native on/off contrast up in 4000000:1 + without any DI and with HDR then the digitals will ad another step on CRT and I am sorry to say, but the CRT days are numbered a long time ago. |
You may not be, but you certainly prattle on like you have something to prove, or some striking revelations that will make CRT owners ditch all their systems and go digital immediately.
Too sharp is too sharp. Do you really want to see jagged edges or nice smooth lines?
CRT is obviously a preference, and has some really great pros, that do hold true.
I'm a CRT owner as of 2015. That's this year. If it wasn't doing something right, it couldn't possibly be attractive to new owners. I'm not in this for nostalgia.
I picked up CRT because I hate my digital screens, I hate my UHD samsung, I'm not interested in digital anything until they can pony up non irritating results.
As for "days numbered" this statement has been sung for years, and one day, perhaps, but they will have to work hard to do so. Rainbow effects, poor contrasts and other annoyances plague these machines, and they don't really hit a film / crt type of supporting visual.
I can no longer go to regular cinemas around here due to the extent of dlp systems used, and I can detect image flaws and rainbows everywhere....

Have you seen a Sony VW1100 or a X500 with e-shift 3?? Not much jagged edges there, of corse some, but not visible before your nose is a few inches from the screen.
I only use 3 chip solutions with no rainbows, and the latest JVC has far superior contrast (both on/off and ansi) than any CRT. And these projectors show a very filmlike picture, but they are sharp.
And I am sorry to say that everything we see on our projectors today is based on pixels not lines. 
I also hate these LED Samsung UHD TVīs, they have nothing to do with good picturequality. A 4K OLED on the other hand, that is another story. But I find projectors and a matte 1.0 gain screen to have something a TV can never have...

I've never been to a theater that had DLP projectors with rainbow effects... 3 Chip DLPs don't use color wheels, hence the 3 DLP chips and thus no rainbow effect.
For what its worth there are DLP projectors that use color wheels and do not exhibit rainbow effect. Generally though they cost more than most can afford and thus never get mentioned.
as for CRT. Those that use it, know it, and understand projection technology, will probably agree with me that CRT reproduces a moving image that just can't be reproduced by digital.
4K is great and all, but there is a hell of a lot more to a display than just how much resolution it is capable of.
and FWIW, even if it was a hands down proven fact that these new $10,000+ 4K projectors were better in every aspect vs CRT, I don't know too many people that have a spare 10 grand lying around to say "Screw this 200 pound monster"
I sure don't anyway, much less do I have any interest in blowing that much cash for a projector I'll barely use. I prefer both CRT and digital for different uses, they each excel in specific applications.
