Okay, the German wisecrack learned better..

So actually the 2SC5047 did last for 2 - 3 minutes (PG9+ Def boars running n my 10PG+). Then the projector shut down with the same symtoms as decribed in post 1 by Thomas. So I unsoldered an original Toshiba 4288a from another working spare Def board and put it on Thomas board. This time the HOT didn't even last for 2 minutes. But, me sh*thead had forgotten to put in the screw to attach the transistor to the heatsink Embarassed

.

guaranteed you have other issues. You'll need to scope the input to the HOT to make sure the waveform is very close to a square wave. If the drive signal has a tilted waveform, you'll be blowing up more HOTs, quickly.

Thanks for the advice Curt. I only have a DMM with cap tester, some left over 100 uF caps and a bit of courage due to the abundance of NEC PG Deflection boards. Since the same failure occured in two different projectors I reckoned it can be traced down to the Deflection board and nothing else.

Do the 6pgplus and 9pgplus Def boards differ in anything else but the ink stamp? If not, then I probably would let the broken board sit in a drawer until the others break down and I really need it.

Cheers
hansilili

The two deflection boards only differ in IC5001 'FVA' vs. 'FVB'

I never did figure out the differences between the deflection boards. Some will swap, others will give HV, but you lose control over keystone and pin. try it, you won't blow anything up.

I think the key is in the small added boards.
I am currently using a type 72137094 deflection board in my 6PG xtra, that came from a newer generation 9PG plain, I transplanted the small boards from my original PG xtra deflection board //that also killed a bounch of HOTs even after complete readjustment, cap changes, etc.// and added, altered a dozen parts, so I ended up with a frankenstein-styled, but fully working PG xtra def board, and I am still using that board without problem.
I also posted here what was needed for the conversion aided with pictures and parts list, but now as I am thinking on it, this conversion isn't an easily redoable thing, neither looking a professional mod, so it's just totally useless now...
At that time it just worth me the effort instead of buying a new one for $250.
