Has anyone heard of the "audiophile PS1"? The first model (1001 in the US) is supposed to have a real bang up audio processor on the inside. Information on it here: http://www.stereophile.com/cdplayers/708play/
I managed to find two of these in some ghetto fabulous thrift shop after calling them. Unfortunately, one of them has a laser that has trouble reading audio CDs. Lots of skipping. I configured the laser and other bits using this guide last Friday: http://dogbreath.de/PS1/LaserAlignment/Laser.html
The guide worked like magic and I played a disc which had been causing trouble for several When I came back on Sunday though, the PS1 started skipping again 
I tried redoing the configs over and over according to this guide. Finally, the only settlement seems to set the PS1 laser at about 16mv versus its traditional 11.4mv. Youch! 
The laser might burn out quicker but at least a replacement from eBay is easy enough. Anyone have any ideas why I have to set the laser so high here? Again, these tend to be burned audio CDs that have a few scratches. Perhaps the brand of disc plays a role here too? Unscratched PS1 game discs seem to boot no problem.

Ecrabb's response made me laugh for sure 
The PS1 is not the first choice when it comes to "professional" level gear. This is going off of what several other reputable sources cited though. While improbable, the claim does not strike me as impossible.
I would believe the part on the burned audio CDs, yet I have seen these things read such discs before..

I have one and although I am not an audiophile, it does sound nice.

I forgot to mention that if you leave the unit turned on for 2 weeks there is a big difference in sound. I know it should not matter but it does. I never turn mine off. Before you laugh just try it. I laughed, once.
