Looks like I'm heading down to the DFW area sometime in Sept/Oct for the first time ever. I will most likely be driving. I'm guessing there's a pawnshop close by that needs a visit.
Looks like I'll go through SLC, Denver, Amarillo on the way down, and may come back through Albuquerque and Phoenix.
Will post more regarding the dates once I know more...

I am planning on heading that way at around the same time. I will definitely be in Denver for Cedia.

Curt,
If you go over to AVS, then you can usually find codes to get free tickets. I have never used them, as I just buy the tickets when I arrive. The price has always been $50.
Cedia is Sep 26-28. I love going not just for the show, but spending time with like minded friends.

I've never been to one, so the timing is right. I'l cough up the $50.
Let me get the rest of the trip firmed up, the dogs will NOT be impressed going to the kennel for 2+ weeks....

What I really need is a house sitter for about 3 weeks. The offers to buy projectors are coming in like crazy. I may just do Vancouver to DFW to Wa DC to Chicago and home.
Firming up stuff now, but I may well end up with every last Barco 909 and G90 ever built....

I think you will like it. There should be some stuff there that applies to your sound install business. AVS usually has a party on Friday night. Of course, everyone is going out to dinner every night. For some reason, I always end up with Mark Seaton and Itai (along with his group which includes Crabb).
FYI and IIRC - to get in you just need a business card. For those that don't have a business, make one up and print out a fake business card. I am pretty sure the first time I went they asked me for a business card. Now that I am in the system, I pay and they give me a pass.

Definitely keep us posted on the dates. It'd be great to meet up in Denver. It looks like Cedia is at the end of September, and it's in the Convention Center is a really nice venue.

It better be freaking unbelievably spectacular. This place and show should leave my mouth agape after that weekend. If it isn't that over the top, then I might have a few choice words. Why? I have heard for the last four years from all of the west coast pu$$ies cry about Atlanta and Indy. There were multiple excuses, but the one that went unsaid or underbreath is they didn't like the travel distance. Well, now all of the east coast guys get to travel west. I am looking forward to the trip, but my expectations are high.

I never heard all the whining from the west coast guys, but I don't know that I would have - I tend to ignore stuff like that.
I can't speak for anybody else, but where I live it's a pain in the ass to get to CEDIA no matter where it is.
Atlanta is the worst for me because it's too damn far to drive, so I have to fly. I hate hot/humid, so I'm not a big fan of Hotlanta to begin with - especially in September.
Indy is closest for me - about 7 hours. It's a little better than Atlanta distance- and weather-wise, but it's... Well... Indy. Meh.
Denver is by far the nicest city of the three. Even thought it's a longer drive for me, it's a very nice city, the nicest weather, nicest convention center, and definitely cool stuff to do while you're there. It's a short drive to Red Rocks, Estes Park, Fort Collins, and Breckenridge. The mountains are gorgeous, and the aspens are starting to turn the end of September up in the mountains. Definitely some of the most beautiful scenery in the US and even the world.
If you don't just eat, drink, and geek out on home theater the whole time, you'll have a blast.

Don't worry; once you experience Denver and the rocky mountains, you won't want to go back east.

There was a lot more of it the first year in Atlanta. Less the second year, because they had already moved it back to Indy. I still heard it though the last two years I went.
The heat and humidity isn't an issue once you are inside.
As for Indy, I liked it. If you are going just for the show, then the sights are less important. The great thing about Indy is everything is in walking distance.
Not sure how long I will stay in Denver, so I may or may not see any of the sights.

I sincerely doubt that. On Jan 15, I can walk outside in shorts and t-shirt. You will need eight layers of clothing. And no, I don't really care about skiing. I hate cold weather.
On the flip side, I do like the Rockies and would love to spend some time there in summer. I have even thought of buying a place out west somewhere. Of course, I would spend my winters here.

That's actually the biggest misconception about Denver and the surrounding area (and one we're happy to let people believe). We get more sun here than Florida gets (over 300 days per year), and if you're not actually in the mountains, the winters can be quite mild. There are days that you can ski/snowboard in the morning and then come down from the mountains and golf in the afternoon. I've worn a t-shirt in the middle of winter and felt fine. For me, having grown up in the Northeast, I much prefer the climate here to there--no humidity and a lot more sun year-round. But to each his own, right?

Denver really isn't too bad - nothing like the plains states like where I live (which truly does suck). The "bowl" Denver is in makes it much more mild. Less wind, WAY more sun, and quite mild really for the latitude. I really like the nice, clean, crisp, dry air. My body just feels better there.
On the flip side, I just don't much care for FL. I was just in Orlando, and I think the heat and humidity is oppressive - and that was June. The concrete is damp, the air is damp, there's bugs everywhere, puddles everywhere... I guess I hate humidity as much as you hate cold. At least if it's cold out, I can put some layers on to go outside. If you're in FL, you just stew in your own sweat... It's not like you can put anything on or take anything off to make it more comfortable. All you can do is retreat to the A/C.
Like phillyguy said, to each his own.

I agree about humidity. I have come off a plane from the West Coast and then been hit by the wall of humidity leaving the airport. Summer can suck, but it can be moderated with the ocean and wind. For me, I would love to spend Oct through April down here and the summer months in a more moderate climate.
As for the climate in Denver, I am optimistic. I know Denver has more sunny days than Florida. I am sure the entire western US has more sunny days than Florida. I mean it has rained almost every day the last month. Checking the climate data shows that the average high and low in Denver during Jan is 45 and 18. Sorry, you may have an occasional day where the heat spikes (I experienced this in Raleigh), but more often than not the weather returns to the historical average.
I might add that about fifteen years ago I spent two weeks in Co Springs in late Feb. The weather was up and down, but I was still wearing a coat and long underwear most of the time. I ended the trip staying at my cousins house on the backside of Pikes Peak. The three things I most remember is the view was beautiful, it was cold as sh$t and I could not breath from the altitude.
I will say it again. I am kind of excited to head there this year, but you guys are building this place up, so it better be great.

Definitely. Spent a couple summer vacations in Lewisburg with relatives as a kid, and of course driving to and fro through Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, and of course the Smokies. Definitely a pretty part of the country, but for me, nothing beats the Rockies for sheer, awesome beauty.
Speaking of Knoxville... I'm dating myself here, but I was there for the '82 World's Fair. To bring this somewhat back OT, there was an awesome display there. I don't remember any of the details, but there was this massive multimedia install with something like 80 video monitors being drive by 80 LaserDisc players, controlled by 80 Apple ][ computers. I don't recall what the subject matter was even on - I think technology and innovation or something. The whole setup was all visible, behind glass on a giant wire shelving unit. I remember just being absolutely blown away. I probably have a picture of it somewhere.
Man, that was 31 years ago... Funny, some of the things I remember exhibited there like residential solar electric and electric cars are finally becoming viable and/or popular.
Sorry for the thread detour. We now return you to the mega road trip discussion, next stop Denver.
