Ah, excellent. So when the service manual says to start by "Turn VR5004 fully counter clockwise, set all other VRs to center" it's just messin with me? That's how the DEF board service part starts.

Wait a minute, try it turning back where it was, 'H out' pot is meant for the H-output protection, so it can give false alarm in end position, but it isn't really hard to test if the 2SC4288 is bad, just for sure.

I tried. I found the adjustment procedure for it too. Says to try and get 2.0V between TP 6 and 7. It's stuck at like 3.4V regardless of the pot's position. Pot is still good, I checked.
Probably the transistor.
Edit:
Yeah it's the transistor.

Gotchya. Any idea why it blew like that? Did I follow the service manual incorrectly?

Why the F*** are you touching the H-OUT pot in the first place!!! There are two pots for raster size, neither one says H-OUT....

I'll second that!! BEWARE of counterfeit transistors, and it MUST be an "A", nothing else.
If you buy the transistor on ebay and it keeps blowing up, it's a chinese fake. Beware, there are a LOT of them out there.
Even from reputable sources.
