I think it all depends on tube condition. If your pj have great tubes, then jump in and do it, the outcome will well worth the effort, I think the job isn't that bad. I've done this with my boss' PG plain last winter and took about three afternoon (after work) to finish.

Recapping a PG isn't really that bad, just takes time. Do one board at a time and test. Is it worth it? I'd say on a PG10, yes. On a 9.... maybe with mint tubes. But I personally wouldn't, and didn't.

Depends on the intended use, if you do abit of 15.7kHz use, the machine is perfect for it.

Not too bad, but uneven on the green, and probably too small a raster size used. Still usable for some things, use the top portion above the static wear and do a 2.35:1 screen.

I haven't even put that many hours on the set since buying it. That green wear is about the same from when I bought it. And yeah you could tell it wasn't set up very well.

How did it look on screen with that wear? Wouldve been abit of a pink haze there?

I'd fix it if you've been living with that bit of text wear on the green. That's a lightly worn tube, all things considered.

Like, the PG 9 is an alright set, nothing top tier. If I had paid $3k+ for it I'd be a lot more willing to just jump into this. At the moment I'm not sure.

Sorry, thought this was the XG thread. Too much on the mind. Recap first. I do have a near minty set of PG tubes on eBay if you want a mint green. $50 for the set, $40 for just the green since it's sought after the most.
Make sure the set works before buying tubes...

F*** thats cheap, id take them if i didnt have a perfect set in mine!!
If you went a 16:9 screen, but made sure to more the image up abit for 2.35:1 movies, you could avoid that wear at the bottom and with HD-145 lenses the focus should still be tight enough.

Yeah I'd be all over those tubes if I knew this was going to work after recapping.
Speaking of which, I've found about 40ish bad caps on the DEF board. And a few leakers. The leaky ones seem to be the nichicons, especially the 16V 47uF ones. I might pull the larger ones to see if there's something going on underneath them.
I pulled a large value nichicon and one of its legs had goo on it. I'm replacing all the nichicons regardless of ESR reading now.
Edit:
Oh also, the two red LEDs on the DEF board. Are they supposed to light up? Because they flash on for a second then turn off when the projector is running. I forget what they did before.

The two LEDs are failure indicators on the DEF board, they might flash during startup or scan switching, but otherwise they should be off.
If you have the service manual you should check/readjust the test points on the DEF board, that should help with keeping good lock on every resolution you throw at it.

Yes they only come on with a deflection failure. Do those caps and if it works, grab those tubes

Here's a pictured of it recapped. The ones marked with green I didn't touch. I replaced all the nichicons as they seemed to be leaky. The upside down cap in the back with the wires is the first one I removed earlier in the thread...I managed to take a solder pad when I removed it. Lesson learned. I'll put it in the projector tomorrow.

No idea why its up that way. But yes, this is why it is commonly suggested by Curt and Macgyver here to pull or cut caps off and solder to the legs, being that they are both foremost experts, i would never see a need to question their judgement.
