Is what we see when pause a movie what is actually delivered during playback or does pausing make the image more crappy? I think the image always looks less detailed when paused than when watching a film, but wonder if that is just my brain processing/conceiving motion differently than a still. I am not satisfied by the still image at all, but when watching am happy with it. Am I crazy or is there some rational/accepted truth to this?
I can't see that a test image would somehow look better "playing" than if it weren't a froze single frame, tho', so it must be perception...

I cook my own pizzas here made with all fresh stuff, no mass produced fast food here Seeing it in the flesh would certainly show it off alot better mate yeah, so when youre next in QLD, swing by for a look.
Its not paused in the first shot, but the other 2 are, its funny how bad it gets when pic taken with an ordinary digital camera.
Onkel, its my lounge room mate, this is Australia, i live in a steel shed out in the bush

Case is that Star Wars(episode I)?
That is one movie I have yet to watch since I got my crt projector(star wars marathon soon and I have all of them on blu ray for the best picture and sound)
Most screen shots do not tell how good a projector pro forms as I found real quick(watched YouTube videos of sets like mine before I got it) it better in person

Yes it's episode one on Bluray.
The biggest issue with screen shots, cameras aside, is what people view the images on. Those images were cropped to by able to upload them, but not scaled, and id say there is a good chance most of the viewers are looking at a digital display for this.

I still can't get my head around the idea pause is *actually* worse...why would that be true? Nashou has an oppo brp-93, I think, so not like he's got a low-end player...and he claims still-frames on his TVOne (blend head) do look better...how strange! Surely we are kidding ourselves on this...
Hmm, maybe we can see if Mac will chime in...do players utilize different circuits that degrades/lessen IQ when outputing paused video?
And IF pausing displays a "worse" image than during continuous playback, do the setup DVDs display test panels in the "play" or "paused" mode?
thanks!

I did notice in the interlaced-video era that in digital-pause, one field would be thrown away. Otherwise the image would shake.
This could still be true for 1080i , but in 1080p I wouldn't see a reason to do so.

It only looks worse cause motion hides the digital grain that is clearly visible during paused images.
