Allrighty then. The server we put together to rip all my BD's and DVD's to is running Win 7 Home Premium 32 bit. The OS and other applications are on a 80 GB HDD (drive C . then we created a multi-TB raid 5 array (drive M . On drive M: I have created a folder to hold all my rips named "MKV". I have a borrowed Western Digital media player to test with.
In Windows 7, Windows media player has two sample videos. I can view those sample vids through the WD player. Now, in my folder, "MKV" in drive M: I have ripped 6 BD's and 2 DVD's. I can't see them in the WD player OR Windows Media player. I thought I had a premissions issue but I think it's set correctly. I think if I could get passed seeing it in WMP, the WD player might stand a chance. What the heck am I missing?

Did you add the M:\MKV folder to the media folders?
I.E in Media Center, go to Tasks / settings / Media Libraries / Videos / Add folders to the library.
> I thought I had a premissions issue but I think it's set correctly.
Don't assume; check the `Share` and `Advanced Sharing` properties for that M:\MKV folder.
Compare it to the properties of `C:\Users\Public\Public Recorded TV\Sample Media`.

I use Slysoft AnyDvd HD to create ISO files and mount them using Slysoft virtual clone drive on the W7 PC(a free program) with no issues. When I was doing the HDDVDs I had to use the MKV container but with BD and SD the ISO files work just fine. Never liked using MKV much.....
Both file types work fine using the Dune but the amount of file names created using MKV was a royal PITA IMO !
Chip what type of HD video card and what program are you using for BD play back on W7 and when you say permission issues is that with copy restrictions ?

I think MKV is just a learning curve. I'm not and never intend to play movies directly from the PC. Only stream to Dune players. The "permission issues" were sharing permissions that seem to be sorted out now.

Mkv is just a file container. Its the program one uses in making of the mkv that is the issue. MakeMKV is an awesome way to make lossless copies of BDs, but its naming schematic is terrible.

google Shark Codec, download the Windows 7 32 bit pack, install it, and run it, it will ask if you want to associate pretty much every file type in existence for audio and video to windows media player media center, do it, and voila!
I used shark codec to play my MKV files through media center on my 360, works like a charm.

You do know most(if not all) windows 7 installs are 64 bit not 32 bit
Though the shark codec sounds great I may have to try it

He said he installed windows 7 32 bit, so that's the one I told him to use. If he is using 64 bit, then he must also download the 64 bit addon in addition to the 32 bit addon, you HAVE to have both for 64 bit, 32 bit you only need the 32 bit pack.

Second on the Shark codec pack. Windows does not natively play MKV. But with the Shark codec I can even use my Xbox to play all my MKV movies.

Not sure how large the partition is that you are trying to access but Win7 32bit has a 2TB max as do all 32bit MS operating systems.

Chip, did you use makemkv to do the rips? Because my WD media player reads those directly off my server.
Make sure your media is actually encoded right.

With HD you can fill up a 2Tb drive real quick ! My recommendation would be to use 3Tb drives formatted for GPT NOT MBR !
Some BD discs end up producing 20 or so file names using MKV and when you select a title the Dune shows all 20 files and I had to delete the unwanted files for each movie. It does save space but I prefer ISO files. The Dune can only see a 3Tb drive if formatted for GPT...

Well I have Windows 7 Home premium 32 bit. I have a 80 GB drive for the OS and apps. AND I have 6 TB of raid 5 (3-2TB drives). That is done and that is functional. I am using MakeMKV. I ripped a couple of DVD's and BD's but had no way to test them so I borrowed a older WD media player to test it. I could not access the folder I set up on the raid 5 array (drive M: named MKV). Later, the person who helped me work through setting up the raid suggested I download and install CCCP codec. After that my MKV file was available to WMP. When that happened it also became available to the WD. The DVD rips seem to play fine both audio and video. The BD rips are giving me gas. Video is fine but audio is hit or miss when playing direct to a flat screen. I ether get static or no sound at all. I have to move the WD to the theater AVR and see if I have sound that way. The only way this is going to work for me is if it works through a AVR AND direct to a flat screen without intervention.
So what I've been doing is saving the highest audio format for the theaters AVR to deal with and the lowest format for direct to the flatscreen in the living room. So when available I have been selecting "TrueHD", "DD 3/2+1" and "DD 2.0".
I have noticed that "TrueHD" is not always a option. Also "DD 2.0" is not always a option BUT it seems that "DD 3/2+1" is always a option. I'm not sure what's plugging up the audio works here. Might it be the older WD or am I giving the flat screen to much to think about and it's going on strike.
Right about now, I'm leaning towards dumping everything off the M: drive, uninstalling CCCP, put all WMC and WMP settings back to default and start over because this just ain't right. It should not be this hard.

Right now I'm way behind in the amount of rips I had hoped for during my vacation but until I make the ones I have done work, I'm on hold for any more rips. Just to much time wasted if I have to switch gears.

Can I re-open a MKV to see how it was processed. I have one BD that is working correctly "Transformers 2" Why I have audio from that (at the flat screen) and not the other BD's is a mystery.

Chip does your Dune see the files properly on your HDD ? Try Slysoft ANYDVD HD for free for 21 days and create ISO files. Do a right click on the fox icon in the system tray (when downloaded} and select rip to image, Also download Slysoft virtual clone drive(free) for viewing the files on your PC. Using the Dune connected to my Samsung plasma via HDMI everything works fine here...
I think handbrake is your problem if your using it ?

Don't have a Dune player yet. Am using a Western Digital media player to test with. Not using Handbrake, just MakeMKV.

One of the BD's that I was unable to get sound at the living room flat screen was the latest Shrek. When I ripped it, I selected TrueHD, 3/2+2 and 2.0. It played video just fine but no audio. I deleted it and re-ripped it leaving out the TrueHD and BAM I got sound. Why?
