Hello gents,
my name is Matteo and I'm writing from Italy. I've always wanted a CRT projector at home to build up my first home teather. I've started looking around and I came across this great site with a lot of info.
I'm a newbie on the matter and I've been reading here and there on this site. I've been offered a Barco 808 graphics for a decent price but the seller does not know the conditions of the machine. He just told me it powers up and that's about it.
If I ask to have a look at it in person, what should I check to be sure not to buy an expensive door stop? Very Happy
Is there a method to check how many hours the projector has worked and to check the usage of the tubes?
Thanks in advance for your help and keep up this good site.

Matteo

I love the fact that even at this late time, we still have new CRT owners. Sold one last week to a newbie who also is posting here. Gotta love it. Welcome, Matteo!

Do also read the FAQ, but looking through the lenses at the tube faces is what is going to determine the value of the set. Even in mint shape with near perfect tubes, a set in North America that isn't a 9" is worth maybe $200-300 on an as-is basis. Double that maybe in Europe.

Welcome Matteo,

I hope You'll get a decent machine to start with. You might want to look for some inexpensive scaler or video processor too. That is, if You want to play laser games on the big screen too Wink

I'm happy that you choice is a Barco 808.
I think I know pretty well this projector so I can help you in choosing and advice.

Sono contento che tu abbia scelto un Barco 808
Penso di conoscere abbastanza bene quel proiettore cosi da poterti aiutare nella scelta e nei consigli.

Thank you everybody for the warm welcome.
This is a picture of the item:

It has no cover panel for the controls and it's missing the remote too. I only know it powers up and appears to work. I do not know if it has the IRIS system. The seller is asking 350 euros for it.
I did read the FAQ, particularly the section to evaluate tube conditions. So this sounds clear to me (I hope!).
Some questions:

- do I need to remove the lenses to check out the CRT surface to evaluate the tube conditions? Or is it enough to look through the lenses? Would I need some kind of light source to look into them?
- is there a way to read the hours meter of the device or is it only accessible via on screen menu?
- would the unit be usable without remote?

Sorry for the newbie questions. I just want to make sure I'm not throwing away my already limited budget for this.
I'm an arcade game collector so gotta love CRTs and live with them still for a long time. Certain things just don't look right on a LCD or modern panel Wink
Thanks again,

Matteo

With a flashlight you can inspect the tubes through the lenses but it's a good idea to take of the lenses and have a decent look!

On screen only.

- would the unit be usable without remote?

Yes, the internal remote is the same as the external.

You can always pull up the hour meter in the service menu and look into the green lens to read it. It will most likely be reversed and upside down depending on the mounting of the projector, but you don't need a screen to read it

The value of a crt projector is all in the state of wear of the tubes.
To see this state you should remove the lenses (there are 4 screws for each lens).
The hours of operation are read from the screen menu.
If it is a Barco 808(non s) it has no iris.
You can use the wired remote but during calibration will be more complicated perform many settings.

Good, thank you everybody again for your suggestions and explanations. I'll contact the seller to see if I can go there on a visit to make an inspection of the machine.
In case the tubes are in good condition and I decide to buy it, is it complicated to get a remote for it?
Bye,

Matteo
