i'm fixing a pair of headphones for a co-worker and i'm having a beast doing the soldering. the wires are the usual AWG2000 in size, but seem to be coated in something that prevents connectivity but prevents solder from adhering.
anyone run into this and how to remove the coating so I can solder the wire to the drivers?

okay, you burn it off, cool. err hot.
i was trying my pencil on low (20W) because i didn't want to hurt the wires.
fine - they want to play tough? i have a butane torch that i just refilled.
bring it on demon wire, bring it on.

Use a soldering gun. (yeah, I know, a good computer tech has at least 2 of those, right? )
20 watts won't heat it up enough. A touch of the gun will though, then solder it back on with the iron.

I have a pair of those also. Pretty decent sound for the money but the cables suck !

But I'm still going to threaten it with the butane torch.

so i finally got a chance to get back to this. the weller gun did the trick. i put the wire on an anti-burn mat i have for torch under cabinetry and when the weller got hot i wiped the tip on the end i had been cleaning to no effect with emery paper. the quick wipe left what appeared to be a good tinning on the wire - perfect in fact.
thinking i had the job half done with sanding i wiped the other lead of the cable - again perfect tinning.
thinking that i had merely coated the lacquer i tested with a meter - perfect connectivity.
sometimes the right tool is all that's needed - thanks guys.
