You're pretty much proving my lifespan point when they're selling 'new' sets that are already refurbished in quantities so that someone like Sears can stock them. Scary! Shocked

Yeah, not surprising. It's Sam's Club, you're looking at an 8' display from 5 feet away, the source was probably crappy satellite, and did I mention it's Sam's Club? Wink

Saw it at CEDIA. Very, very impressive, but... I guess it feels like it's too big or something. It's a TV, not a projection screen. A giant projection screen feels right to me; a giant TV doesn't. But, it is a sight to behold. Not that it matters at the price of a luxury car or two.

Went into JB HiFi today. 70" Sharp $3100 and 80" Sharp $7998. Ok so I will check Good Guys etc. I have to say though not to sharp in image terms compared to the 60" that was next to it.

I never buy extended warranties, but after what's been said about this item, should I look into getting one?

Never owned a flat screen of this size.

Not unless they offer warranties 4-6 years after purchase, which they won't. Typically, if electronics doesn't fail in the first 100 hours due to manufacturing defects, then they die 4-6 years after purchase. Extended warranties only cover 2-3 years after the purchase price, and very little fails in that time period.

I know very little about the new Sharp sets, but expect about a 5 year life span out of it. That's typical of a lot of flat screens. Does that make you re-evaluate spending $3500? Smile

(and yes, I think my life expectancy is accurate, they won't tell you that at the stores).

that is true i got a sony flat panel for free thanks to a busted panel Thumbs Down i priced a replacement it was in the 900 doller range Shocked for a 32 inch i don't even want to imagine the cost of a screen that big but now i have a parts only set so consider the warranty if you have young kids in the house(cousin threw a toy at the screen) my uncle had to buy a new tv because of that

If I had young kids in the house and was worried about a flying toy hitting an expensive set, I'd build a DIY version of one of these:

$100 or so, and the TV would be bulletproof. Use it for a year or two until the kids were old enough to know better, then sell it.

i am doubtful that they will do it again since i told him the cost in front of them plus they are older now so i don't think it will be a problem for him(i don't have this worry as i have a projector(not a crt yet waiting on curt to ship mine)setup)so a wii mote or ps3 controller fling towards the screen won't hurt it

but if he ever has young kids in the house again i will let him know of the website
