All parts are from 1 device. I may have even left out 1 or 2. All parts were confirmed bad and nothing was changed as a guess. Don't ask me how many hours I have in the repair as I couldn't even guess.

Easy? Hell, I think the stuff you do is voodoo... Electronics might as well be black magic as far as I'm concerned.
Why would so many parts fail? Was it a lightning strike, surge, or ESD victim or something?

This was an AVR and most of the damage was on the preamp side of the audio and also the S-video board. Power to these chips comes after multiple regulators so I'm not thinking a lightning or surge on the AVR itself. However I would speculate a source device that was connect to the AVR and possibly a charge coming in from that device, especially since there was damage on both audio and video.

Interesting. A cable box, maybe... Those seem to make the system more susceptible to power issues because of the separate ground. Worse, is all the super-sensitive HDMI stuff now, I suppose.
It's a been a few years ago, but I posted here about a nearby lightning strike in my neighborhood. A bolt actually hit a house ~75-100 yards away from our place. What blew my mind was that it tripped the AFCI for the master bedroom. I don't remember if you were in on that discussion, but I surmised that, in the immediate vicinity of that lighting strike, that ground actually went high temporarily and back-fed a little current into the house wiring, tripping the AFCI, but not damaging anything. I wonder if it could have been something like that - nearby incident.

I remember you posting about that and I surely agree that a strike can come up through the ground cable. I also remember having an argument with some newbie about protection devices, even at the service panel being a waste of money as your only trying to protect the incoming hot lines. The neutral and ground lines are still unprotected. And a nice hit would just jump right by any protection devices. Minor surges on the hot lines maybe, otherwise, not a chance.

Looking at that pile-o-parts and can't help but think there was AC where DC is supposed to be.

No, someone dropped the coin into the unit, and that's what started the whole thing!

Those part just aren't worth a dime.......
You know, even with that dime there to try to reference the size they still look much bigger in that picture then they really are. I may try a wider shot later.
Unfortunately, while testing out the rest of the receiver I found another output that's not working. So I'm not done yet and that pile will apparently be growing........

Aaand THAT'S why I have really good soldering equipment.
That looked like fun, for ONE device. Although I have had stuff like that. Pushes your tech skills... makes them better.

Oh I enjoyed every part of it. Of course any more it is becoming more of a challenge just trying to locate and order parts. That is sometimes more difficult then diagnose and repair...... I'm ordering more and more directly from China every week.....

I actually do not do any customer work except for friends (note how I left out relatives, lol) and some on here. Mostly, I acquire stuff that is not working and then repair and sell........

I'm so jealous of the skills and knowledge necessary to troubleshoot and repair like this. So cool.

Figured I'd update this thread since the receiver has been working fine for some time now. I have actually decided to keep this one and have put it in one of my systems.
The last problem was the HDMI was not working. I trouble shot it to the HDMI transmitter ic. Had to order it directly from China since I couldn't find any in the US. It was actually pretty cheap through China so I orderd a couple in case I need any in a future project. It's a common transmitter chip. Around a hundred tiny pins was a real blast replacing.
