Just got my Cine8 on the ceiling, it's the model with Sony tubes and color filtered HD8's.

Before i did not have a decent projection surface but now that i have i can seen the edge of the blue tube's wear quite badly + blue sky looks a bit yellow (outside the wear it looks good).

I was thinking, i have a spare BD808S

Sony tubes in my Cine 8

R 8 (perfect on screen)
G 7 (barely visible, i can live with this)
B 6 (i can see the edge)

Mec Tubes in my BD808s

R 8
G 5
B 8 (with a flashlight on the tubes surface i can see some wear, better then my red sony one which is flawless on screen)

My idea was to swap the Blue tube + mounting + 75mhz amp in to my Cine 8. I'd lose the scheimpflug adjustment + a lower bandwidth RGB amp but since they deliberately defocus blue this shouldn't be an issue.

Mechanicly this seems possible, the BD808s mounts seem to use the same mountingmethode so i could swap my current blue mounting hardware for the BD808s one. RGB amps mounts and i think all cables are available.

But will this work electrically? All the cables seem to be available, i have seen ppl ask the same question but no answers. Has anyone done this before?

Edit: There are P16 tubes in the BD808S + R762508 neckboards.

No, you cannot mix MEC and SOny tubes. I've tried it. The flare on the neck is a bit different (or the yokes are, I'm not sure), and the MEC tubes will have a smaller image than the Sonys (or the other way around, I can't remember.

NOw.... what I did not try is to swap magnetics over to the Cine 8 with the Sony tube. That might work.

I do however have new old stock Sony tubes for $750 for the set. I can't remember if we've emailed recently, I just quoted someone else as well.

Not sure i fully understand this, isnt this mechanical?

I can't damage anything swapping these tubes right? Think i will just try this and see what happens.

We mailed yesterday or the day before, i was close to accepting the offer for the tubes but after noticing how good the blue mec tube is i want to check this possibility first.

Just send an email to curt for a final quote Smile

My cine 8 has 3670 hours on the chassis now , i have some burn on green and blue which is noticeable (HT shop demo unit, probably a single image for it's entire life).

Getting new tubes is probably worth the investment.

In the future if you want a significant upgrade you can try to change lenses.

I've seen a 808s with HD145 lenses/adapters and the improvement respect HD8s factory lenses was awesome!

Well i just had to try the mec tube in my 808s

It works great, had to adjust G2. Image is sharp and color is good.

The bad -> the image of my blue tube is too small! It's nice in the middle of the raster but there are huge spaces between the edges.

Is there a way i can adjust this?

There is a vertical height potentiometer, i can almost reach red and blue height, i think i could get it high enough to project on my screen or else i could turn my ceiling bracket 180 degrees.

I can't seem to locate a horizontal width potentiometer, is there such a thing available in my chassis? I read more ppl saying it's not then it is.

I checked the electronics on the neck, they seem 100% identical to my sony electronics.

Should i swap all my mec tubes in the 808s would i get a bigger image? (this isn't the solution, green mec is burned aswell)

No, and that's what I said you would run into. You can slide the yoke backwards on the tube neck, but you risk hitting the neck of the tube with the electron beam, and you'll implode the tube. Try swapping the main yoke, that's about the only way this can work, but I think you'll still have issues.

Seems you were right Smile

The yoke has the same numbers on it, no reason to swap.

One thing i do not understand, the raster on MEC tubes is just smaller then on sony tubes? Or does this have to do with mismatched tubes and voltages?

Should i get 3 mec tubes to use instead of my current sony ones do i have to move my ceiling bracket?

As far as I'm concerned it has to do with the physical shape of the tube. You need three identical tubes.

Picture size in tubes face will be about same and lenses are same, so probably not.

By the way I would find way to use those better 120 Mhz neck boards with MEC tubes.
75Mhz neck boards most probably streaks without mod and are softer. Modding neck boards pinout or finding 808s retro 120 Mhz neck boards for MEC tubes are your options.

I made pinout mod for my BG808s, for Marquee tubes.
