Thank you. Ill take a closer look at this machine and see if anything is in evidence with the caps. At least now I will not be caught off guard should something go south.

Here are a few pics of the PG10. Sorry its not a fancy setup but it's what I have in the new house until things start to get settled.

Uh yes there is! What's interesting is that it apparently was a projector used by NEC, and according to the case, was a prototype. That's way cool if it is. Post some pix of the internals, and let's see if we can see any differences from a production unit. I'm guessing not, but still...

Ill post some pics tomorrow. Anything specific you are curious about? It was explained to me that this was a B Stock projector shipped to AVS and then to the owner. March 1994 is on the data tag. Ill post a picture but I am curious about a bunch of transistors that came with the projector. C2751, DD50, K752, 2AC488A. Do any of these sound familiar? If so what might be the application? I'd live to hear swap them out and up the bandwidth but that's not likely.....it is it?

Those transistors are belongs to the Deflection pwb, which is the weakest point of the NEC PGs. The most valuable amongst them is the 2SC4288A, it is the horizontal output transistor, if something happens to the deflection board it will likely fail, and it cannot be substituted with any other type of transistor.

Ill check all the boards and reseat them. Ill inspect the caps as well and inventory them for future replacement. One would think that with 870 hours on the chassis that caps going south would not be a concern. I guess time has its way with things one way or another.

Ive said it before, and ill say it again... The caps fail from age, not from use or heat. They are old, they will leak and kill your set.
Replace them, all the little ones especially. Dont run the set til you do.

Does anybody have a list of caps needed to recap a PG10?
Go figure....I posted my reply under the wrong thread. No big deal.
Anyway...as the story continues...bad caps have been haunting me lately. First I had a cap blow on my DVR for my security camera system at the house. Fixed. Now at work I have two variable voltage, variable frequency drives that have caps going bad. All kinds of weird crap happens with these. Cap replacement is schedule for this week. There's a reason I love old mechanical pinball machines and relay logic systems....easy to fix and easy to troubleshoot.

No prob on the caps.... time is all i need. The only time I've struggled with caps, or any part replacements for that matter, is in one of my ham radios. SMDs kicked my ass. At least there are no SMDs on the NEC boards....at least what I can see before pulling this thing apart.

No SMDs. Just the electrolytics.
I think Spanky may be asking if you know the best way to replace them on an NEC board, the way i do it and this was suggested by many others here over the years is cut the legs off and solder the new cap to them.

Got it! That is an excellent suggestion. Beats trying to desolder each component and risk damaging any trace. I should have some time to inventory the deflection board tomorrow and then the rest of the PJ on Saturday.
Hoping to go here on Sunday....

Yes! Gotta love service manuals. The PG service manual has a full replacement parts list in it! This will make ordering the caps much easier. I will post a list of all the electrolytics once it has been compiled. It won't be board specific but it will all be here.
How about the metal film caps (400v and 1.6kv) in the HV power supply. Should I replace those as well or stick to the electrolytics?

Only do the regular caps. Do NOT replace the 2 big caps on the deflection board! They are a special order for their size and capacity to withstand the amount of current and ripple from coupling the deflection yokes. There is no substitute for these. A modern cap will blow up.

Well, I got it from the horse's mouth itself some time ago. These were a special order from NEC just for this purpose.
These caps are generally ok.
But you can do whatever you like. Try new one's and see if they get hot.

Tinman, im quite sure Mark AW told me at some point not to replace them with anything less than equal parts too.
