TV/Projector: All of them!

So it's been a few years now since 3D came out. I can't see the effect at all due to my lazy left eye, I've tried a bunch. So the question is, is it a fad, will it fade away, will it stay a niche thing, or will it pick up steam?

I know I've had far less inquiries as to 3D compared to 2 years ago, I'm wondering what those that can appreciate 3D think.

I've warmed significantly to it. My first big 3D experience was Avatar, and I was genuinely underwhelmed. I kept flipping up my glasses during the movie and wishing I could have THAT image... Snappy, bright and colorful instead of darker and muted like with the glasses on. Then, last summer I went and say The Avengers in 3D, and it was a blast. Yes, it's still a nicer image without the glasses, and I truly would rather see a very nice 2D projected image rather than a ho-hum 3D image, but for certain movies, fast-paced action movies, it really is fun.

I've had a 3D projector since early this summer, and I did buy some cheap glasses, but so far haven't watched 3D on it. I need to upgrade my prepro to handle 3D (and I don't feel like splitting HDMI and all that BS to use my current prepro. Maybe after the holidays.

3D sources have been looking better and better. Native 3D movies are becoming more realistic, but the thing that amazes me is how good the industry had gotten on some 2D > 3D movie conversions. For example, John Carter was shot in 2D, but it is one of the best looking 3D discs out there. Also Men In Black 3 was always planned to be a 3D production, but the producer chose to shoot in 2D because he wanted to be able to mess with depth of field during mastering.

I think 3D is a niche, but maybe not a niche market. As 3D continues to evolve and look better while in tandem more people own 3D displays, I suspect we will see more of it. That being said, I wouldn't want to watch more than a couple programs a week (at most) in 3D.

The most important thing is 2D hands down. However, 3D is a cool toy that is fun to play with sometimes.

Exactly. That was my first 3D experience too. I kept putting the glasses back on saying "don't think of the washed out/muted/dark colours... just try to enjoy it".

I think the major issue is that the hardware hasn't caught up yet. Once it does and provides a just a snappy/good pic as regular 2D I think it becomes an interesting delivery medium. An extra brush for the artist to use, just as long as it isn't the only brush they use (think early 3D movies that were all gimmick).

Movies for me are all about escaping so 3D done well can work. We'll see. I can seriously see it going both ways. THe big issue being that people don't like to have to wear glasses or pay the high prices for active glasses for home use. It's definitely still in the early years.

Let them have their 3d cake. Cows eating their marketing meal deserve to be separated from their money.

Avatar 3D was one of the 2 or 3 3D movies I've seen. I hated it, and that WAS at an Imax theater. What Steve and Kal said -- dark, muted, smudged, just a terrible picture. Plus all the obvious issues with 3D.

The sooner it dies, the better IMHO.

All I know is that if 3d dies, I wont have a job anymore Sad . So I hope that we could make some improvements. Soon...
As for Home theater 3d, I think that is just a fad and sooner or later it will die.

The last 3D movie I saw was Hugo and I must have taken the glasses off 20 times. It will get better, but how quickly is the first question and what is the technology ceiling is the second. I will say the Peter Gabriel concert that Cliff showed wasn't half bad.

Maybe I am "simple". The 3D stuff shot in 3D looks cool.

Would I want to watch everything in 3D? Heck no!

But, it is cool to watch stuff in 3D. Some is better of course. I'll take the good with the bad.

I also like black and white stuff. Does it look good on a big screen CRT projections system? NO! I would rather watch it on my older crt televisions. Might be smaller, but it looks better.

Do I want 3D to go away? Heck no!!!

To each their own. I'll pay the price for it for now.

I think that 3d will end up phasing out of tv sets. In my opinion 3d doesnt look good on small screens. Looks like your looking into a cardboard box watching a puppet show.

For a while many thought "passive 3D" LCD sets are doing 120hz per eye refresh,
and there is a way for them to turn the high refresh rate ,but halved vertical resolution into 1080 per eye (didn't work)
then it was 4K, when twice the pixels going to give you 1080 lines per eye (doesn't seem to work).
In reality CRT could do 120hz per eye multi viewer active 3D (and more).

Very interesting. My oldest son (now almost 18) showed up with "lazy" / crossed eyes when he was 2 1/2. The standard recommended treatment was surgery, which is basically "cut the muscle in the eye so it's too weak to cross." It doesn't FIX anything, your brain never learns to see 3D -- it just makes it "look" better. Insane. We ended up finding an eye doctor who does vision therapy, using techniques very similar in concept to what these researchers did. Now my son can see in 3D, catch a ball, etc.

Wish there was a way to get these specialized video games & goggles for home use!

I'd like contact lenses that were powered via induction that could function as 3D glasses.

The contacts could get powered inductively, as per this dude hacking about out at home:
http://hackaday.com/2011/12/20/ben-krasnow-sticks-leds-in-his-contacts-just-for-kicks/

Of course, we could have google glasses with a computer screen in our contacts or as a HUD, etc once power can get to the contacts...
