|
|
Currently looking for an entry level CRT Projector, I got the following offer.
Barco 808 Graphics
Cine8 with limepro and PFC
The Cine8 is a little bit cheaper than the BG808 but needs a new green tube (other tubes are okay), the BG808 has decent tubes.
What would be the best entry projector for me? A BG808 for about 600 euros or a cine 8 for about 800 euros (assume I can get a green tube at a decent price).
From what I have seen the Cine 8 offers updated software – 120mhz instead of 75mhz and a nicer housing.
Does the bandwith increase offer me any advantages if I want to run 1080P? Or is this wasted since it’s also using 8inch tubes.
Anyone with some advice for me? And anything i should pay attention to should i go for either of these?

The relevant factor are the tubes.
Cine8 is a upgrade of BG808 then BG808s
BG808 have Panasonic tubes and bandwidth 75 Mhz.
BG808s and Cine8 have Sony tubes, 120mhz bandwidth, iris autoconvergence system and new firmware.
Sony tubes are more rare than Panasonic.
You can put Panasonic tubes into BG808s or Cine8 with a modify at the pinout of the 120mhz neckboards.
I assume that you are in europe.
I can do that mod, if you want.

You must change tube's supports also (that I have).

Indeed - Europe Belgium
And what would be the advantages of going for a cine 8 with sony tubes or retrofitted panasonic tubes? Except a much higher cost.
And what about 1080p capabilities, i know 8inch tubes arent great but will a cine 8 be better at 1080p then a bg808?

I think that Sony or Panasonic factory's tubes are equivalent.
Someone say that Sony's are bit more sharper.
But they are much rarer than Panasonic.
The lenses are the same (USPL HD8).
Obviously the greater bandwidth of the Cine8 can help to resolve high definition's signals.
In addition, the new software has many useful geometrical adjustments that older BG808 don't have.

What lenses do they both have? That is probably more important than the difference between the tubes.

I have a new old stock set of Sony tubes for $750 for the set. I have two sets of them actually.

If you don't want the Cine 8 let me know I would be interested in some parts if the owner is willing to part out.

I already made an appointment to pick it up
Also found a 7/10 green tube on the forums - this should be good enough to get me started.
Now i also need a way to connect the machine to my HTPC and other devices to this projector but i will start a thread in the appropriate part of the forums.

My suggest is an video processor, a "must" for crt owners if you have more of sources.

I'm currently using a Iscan HD for my older sources on my 720p digital projector + an HT Reciever to regulate all the other things.
I can use port 3 for the iscan - port 5 for HD sources (through my HT reciever).
Or just everything on 5 through my HT reciever depending on the image quality from the iscan.
Offcourse this won't give me CMS etc but this is just a start, i need some way to get HDMI to the projector anyway

Later Cine8s came with the MEC tubes, earlier ones came with Sonys. The later MEC tubes also used in the 1208s/2 are considered sharper than the Sonys. I have always been told (never seen the Sonys in a setup good enough to judge) that it goes regular MEC < Sony < high res MECs.
Also I believe the Cine8s are color filtered so that is a major gain as well.

Well, if that's not the last generation (blackrange with P16 tubes), it's not necessarily the first generation.
It can be a second generation model with LimoPro, PFC and gold plated bnc's inputs. It might be equipped
with color filtered HD8's too...

It has Limopro and PFC
The seller also had a BG808 and he specifically mentioned the color filtered lense he had on it so i assume this one does not (the BG808 might even have the lenses of the cine8 ).
Should this be the case, is it worth offering the seller some money to swap lenses?

Obligatory IMO. The reds will look orange without the filter. Makes a HUGE difference. The standard HD8 lenses aren't very good either.

Okay - i asked the seller about which lenses are on it.
Any other things i should look intoo if i want high performance from this machine (HD144/145 + mounts are a bit expensive atm)

Mounts for what? The HD-145and 144s bolt straight on where the HD-8s come off as far as i know.
