Randy has sent me another PS at no charge even though I am out of warranty. Talk about standing behind your goods.

The question is this. I am not, and never have been a fan of wall wart SMPS's If this is the point of failure. I would like to upgrade to a high quality Linear power supply. I know we are dealing with 5VDC so that is not an issue.

I have several Sigma 11 PCB's here along with most of the parts and the 9v toroid is peanuts just have to figure out a VA rating. I am not looking for improvements in video quality or anything from this just better reliability and longevity from a big desktop style PS and get away from Chinese made plastic junk (In my humble opinion).

I am also not knocking Lumagen in anyway the product is FANTASTIC the support is nothing short of AMAZING!

I am just looking for something more in a power supply.

Here is the information on the PCB's I have. http://www.amb.org/audio/sigma11/

Is my logic sound in thinking this could be a viable replacement?

Thoughts?

Bob Stephan And I were thinking of building a Power supply to replace all the wall warts. I have the schematics somewhere.

You can add as many different voltage outs as you need.

It be nice to plug on main 110 volt in the wall and have it power 10 devises.

Other then the ps for my Pro-Ject speed box. I have no other wall warts in my HT system.

I originally purchased the Sigma 11 PCB's to replace the wall wart on the speed box and to power my Gamma 2 DAC's (http://www.amb.org/audio/gamma2/) that I have yet assembled.

I have not had much time to play with DIY Audio at the moment other then completing my Dual Mono VSPS (Very Simple Phono Stage) which is awesome for the price.

New power supply came in today. It is of a new design versus the original one shipped with my Mini (it was a Spectre wallwart or something to that effect).

I tried quick before I had to leave for work today and looks as if that was the problem.

Looks like I'll be building a Sigma 11 for the Mini and my Moome.

Thanks to Randy for the great service and Craig for the suggestion of it being a supply issue.

James i have been looking at the Sigma 22. I have a bunch of wall warts and love how that like the one I posted can power up to 4 components. The Lumagen XS power supplies are very robust so i think I'll leave them alone.

But I might try to make a single unit with two 5 volt outs and two 15 volts out to power the marquee Vims!!! No SMPS for them, the Marquee SMPS is full of noise.

I thought the Sigma 22 was a dual rail dC power supply and the Sigma 11 was a single rail DC supply but had not looked in to it too far. Would you not only need a +DC supply? I suppose it is not a big deal to just use the ground ad V+ of each output. I also wonder how flexible the board is to multiple V+ voltages vs one V+ voltage. I will need to look closer at it as well.

Regardless the are both of a solid design and the guys on Head-Fi seem to love them. I am just a sheep when it comes to these things and do as others do.

I also have several Hypnotize DC coupled B1 shunt regulated buffers her that I have not touched and 5-6 My Ref B Chipamps to build, Just not enough time in the day.

Here is a pCB of the Sigma11, As you can see there are 4 sets of voltage outs.

For the Lumagen the original power supply was 5 amp I think and the onboard heat sinks for the Sigma11 allow only
up to 1 amp. So we'll have to go with off board Heat sinks that should be pretty big to get 5 amps the MUR's they use are rated up to 8 amps, so it should be ok.

And here is the dual rail I was thinking of building to power the Marquee's Vims +5 and -5 volts.

I can place it above the Pj's in the center and run the power wires to the Vims. Not sure what affect the long power wire runs will have. Might not be a good idea But it be a fun project or learning exercise none the less.

Sorry to hear of your power supply woes Nash.

I am waiting to buy my toroids from Antek http://www.antekinc.com/details.php?p=658. I only need 5VDC so this is what I need. I believe the largest lumagen uses a higher voltage supply.

As you indicated a large heatsink will be required. I was looking at this HS stock http://www.par-metal.com/heatsink.php I know there is a guy on ebay that dos them also. He is know in the DIY audio and DIY LED aquarium lighting circles.

What I was thinking of using is the rear heat sink of my spare Marquee's. I'd do the Bottom mount method.

I just wonder if One Sigma11 will be able to handle two Radiances?

LOL, I was thinking the same thing too. But I would rather save it for a larger amplifier project down the road.

Just realized I have two HDQ's, will their power supplies work with the Radiance? At work now So cant check the ratings or connector size.

Good point Mac.

I have used PC supplies to power my R/C chargers in the past. Did not think of that in this case.

Since I have the Sigma boards here already I figured I would use them.

What fun is that Mac? Wink

And that +5 volt out is only 2 Amps, I need 5A.

Thats the +5VSB line. That line is always on and is not connected to the normal +5 line.

The above supply will provide a total of 190W combined. The 3.3v @24amps and +5v @35A maximum.

Don't you think the Lumagen SMPS is full of noise to.?

I Don't know how much effect it have on the pic, but i for sure need to pull the plug off all SMPS when i play music on my setup..

I would love to compare the Theta Compli Blu with the OPPO 83 and see if there is a difference.

Looking forward to hear about your results.. Thumbs Up
