Is there a preferred place to install a CRT in terms of ideal picture conditions - Ceiling mount or on the floor better? Thought that I'd let the experts chime in - Thanx

Ceiling...Otherwise floor mounted the projector has the best seat in the house. In my theater I sit directly below the projector. A lot of folks say that's the projectors sweet spot.

My Marquee 8500 is currently floor mounted and it definitely does not have the best seat in the house

Aside from maybe the degree of keystone required (and minor difference in phosphor area used for same screen size) if the screen location wrt offset from the tubes varies, I can't see why/how it could matter... straighten me out though...

As you can tell from the answers your getting, there is no real difference in performance, floor, or ceiling mounted. There might be.... might be.... some minuscule observable traits on a scope, but to the vast majority of real world applications, it a moot point. The real difference is in the use of the room; floor mounted projectors eat up a lot of space that could be better utilized as seating areas, then the projector's sweet spot.

Just one thing, If you floor mount it has to be rock solid unless you like to adjust everything all the time.

The Marquee has been anchored into a concrete floor; It is mounted onto an Electrohome support frame. I set up two counter like tables offset at 90 degrees as a buffer to "protect" the projector

Not an expert , but I'll chime in since I have an 8500 like someone else that posted.
My 8500 is floor mounted as well, on a wooden & medal pedestal, with a couple of concrete (covered in black felt) stoppers (along with the projector's own weight) hindering its movement should it be accidentally bumped. Since it is floor mounted, it was easy for my ISF calibrator (especially after I upgraded lenses and the focal length changed!) to get the projector in the best location relatively quickly, using minimal keystone and what have you.
I'm sure most of the ceiling-mount guys have the same degree of movement flexibility in how their pjs are mounted.
My room is not much wider than the width of my screen either; maybe 2 feet on each side of the screen. So I sit off to the sides any way. And since I sit closer to the screen for a more immersive experience (for movies anyway), the projector is off to my rear..with the heat it gives off on one side as well

In my opinion, the configuration method CAN make a real difference in PQ, depending on the ceiling height.
Using the same screen, both mounting ways will give the same numbers regarding trow distance, projection angle
and negative correction value. But not the same vertical viewing angle ( eyes-middle of screen ).You will always
have a eyes-height of approx. 3,5 feet.
With another words, in a average house with a ceiling height of let's say 8 feet, the screen will be closer to
the ceiling in a front ceiling configuration and closer to the floor in a front floor configuration.
So MOSTLY, a floor config. will give a slightly better picture ( better contrast and light output, less colorshift )
in my logic. Am i wrong ?
