Hahahaha.... Wellllll, how would you of found the broken trace without them?
Plus, it was to show how to troubleshoot. I bet a lot of techs would of just addressed the sound problem and would of started by replacing all the ic's related to sound output. Then when that didn't work would of replaced the ATSC tuner board. This while racking up the customers bill. Then when that didn't work probably would of told the customer that the tv was not repairable. When all along it was a simple repair of a broken trace.
If I had a dollar for every tv I have repaired that just came from another repair shop.........well, I'd have lots of dollars!!!

Nice job, Mac. I really respect your skills.
From years of troubleshooting computers and software, A/V, cars, etc., I have really good troubleshooting skills, but I simply don't have the deep understanding of how all the electronics components work together. I wish I did, but so little time to learn right now. Maybe when I retire.

And the point of this exercise was to show that you really don't have to have a good understanding of "HOW" the parts work. You don't need to know how the I2C bus lines functions, or why this is here or that is there. You just need to gather your symptoms and look at the "map" (schematic) and see if there is an association between them. And if there is, what is the common denominator between them. Then just concentrate on that location and forget about all the other stuff in there. So your not looking at a hundred or thousand parts, your only looking at the parts that would affect your symptoms.
Not much different then if your car doesn't start and you pull the coil wire and don't have spark, you don't go testing the fuel pump next....

Mac, I myself also don't like random part replacement when troubleshooting, and your steps were very logical to me. However we, who saw just the schematic had less chance to put assumptions on ATSC board's working, but visual inspection of the ATSC -at least for me- could gave me a good idea how are those bus lines are done, so it was a bit hard nut. Anyway, good work!

so the moral of the story is that there's no need to buy that expensive conductive paint, just use mouse pee?
Good call Mac on this one, there's no way I would have gotten it. I would have been one of those 'other' repair shops.

But here's the thing gjaky. The ATSC module is in an enclosed metal case. And I never looked in there. I first needed to confirm if the problem was on the main or not. And if it was not on the main, then I would have gone poking around in there. But I had already concluded that the bus lines would of went directly to the controller ic so there would really not be anything to test except for maybe some bad solder joints.
I'll tell you what, next time i'll post some pictures also.

Mouse pee???
HAHAHAHAHA
Now that is a new one even for me... Though I have been lucky and never seen animal droppings in any of the electronics I've worked on. Worst case scenario is a bug that got fried by an output transistor a long time ago...
Mouse pee.... lmao, I'll be going on that one for a while now

Question for you, Mac? Have you taken care of the offending "guest" that damaged the set, yet?
