How important is disabling the parking ? Just not quite sure I'm ready to start mucking around in the HDD bios yet. Is this only required on the WD greens and why is it a problem ? WD could have made it easier to change.....

It is very important to disable parking on LINUX based OS's which the DUNE is. If you don't, the HD will reach end of life in less than two years. You can wait a little while and play for now, but don't wait forever. It is really EASY to disable parking. Just download the link I posted, burn the ISO, and boot to the CD live. Then just type what I posted and you are done. You can always put it back the way it was, but once your HD wears it's over.

Your HD will be fine for a while to mess around with, but don't wait forever to disable parking...

So do you rip all your BR discs to hard drive by creating an iso?

I use ISO for TV series and I usually use BD folder structure for movies.

Most movies I rip "movie only," and I just keep the HD audio track (if there is one). I keep all English subs that are on the disc.

I use ISO for TV series because yaDIS doesn't work with folder structure properly on TV series. So BD iso or individual episodes is the only way to make it work.

For BD and HD DVD is it best to record the files as iso files to the HDD ? What is BD iso and how do you use it ?

Also, if you use WD green drives be sure to run WDIdle3.exe on them to shut off the parking feature. You can get a live DOS boot disc CD with WDIdle3 on it through the link below:

http://www.jzab.de/content/wdidle-bootcd

You might discover that you need to set your MB to IDE instead of AHCI to get it to work. This seems to depend on build date of the drives and varies from month to month.

Also, people have reported that disabling parking makes the drives run bad. I have never seen this problem and have always completely disabled parking. To do this when the live CD boots up just type:

wdidle3 /r

This will display parking time curently set (usually 8 seconds). Then type:

wdidle3 /d

This disables parking. Then type:

wdidle3 /r

to verify parking was disabled.

If you want to keep some parking enabled set the drives to park after 300 seconds (maximum time). Type wdidle3 /300.

I have a friend trying to disable the parking on my WD Green 3TB hard drives This is what he is having issues with...

Quote:

Problem: When I boot to the bootable USB (DOS) the prompt shows "C:". I can see and run wdidle3.exe but it reports "this is not a WD drive" and it reports my system HDD not the USB connected WD drive. I cannot get this process to "see" the WD drive when booting to DOS with the USB drive or a CDROM.

Here are the steps I followed:
1) Create bootable USB drive with the HP USB Storage Format Tool
1a) Options = FAT32 / Quick Format / Create DOS startup disk / Use files from location (I select the location where I downloaded the WIN98 DOS files)
1b) The bootable USB is created without issue
2) I copy wdidle3.exe to this bootable USB drive
3) I power off the computer, plug in the WD USB external drive and the bootable USB drive I just created and then power on while pressing F12
3a) I select the option "USB Device"
3b) The system quickly boots to DOS and provides the "C:\" prompt (I can run "dir" and see the wdidle3.exe file - it is the only file on the USB drive)
4) I run the command "wdidle3.exe /d" and it reports "not a WD drive" and shows my internal HDD (toshiba) that is connected to the motherboard. The application cannot see the WD drive.

Any ideas ? Thanks !

The HD must be connected to a SATA port on the MB of the PC that you are using. Also, it's best to set the SATA port to IDE in the PC BIOS setup screen. Some of the drives I have had flashed fine with AHCI enabled, but others needed to be set to IDE in the bios first.

I always just do one drive at a time, but they say all drives connected that are WD will be flashed to the specified value simultaneously.

Is LCC (load cycling) still an issue with the 3tbs? I thought the issue was limited to the sub 3tb drives.

Yes, it's still an issue on all the new WD green drives. I checked and set all mine.

That would be a huge thread! Check out the MPC forum. There is an entire section just for yaDIS and more.

I have two external 3Tb WD Green drives fully loaded and now I need to back them on on two new external 3Tb WD Green drives. The problem is this. I'm using WD Smartware v1.6.4 and I have Microsoft.net framework 4 installed on my XP. According to instructions I open the software, go to home then highlight the drive to copy to then hit backup and choose the drive to backup. In the home menu nothing happens when I try to highlight the drive to copy to or from and if I click backup it only gives me the option to backup my C drive ?
On the home page I see all three drives in my case the E and F drive but no means to copy the E to the F drive ? Confused

Prolly because it (the software) thinks "why would anyone wanna backup an external/internal non-system drive?" Can't you just click and drag the files?

Thanks Craig. The only things stored on the WD drives are ISO files can I use this to clone an entire drive to a new one all at one time ? I was hoping the WD software could easily perform this function. Has anyone successfully used the WD software to make a back up drive other then the C drive ?

I have never used any WD software, except Data Lifeguard Diagnostic. Why do you have to clone the drives anyway? Why can't you just copy the files?

If you use TeraCopy, select the option to verify the data after the copies are finished. It takes twice as long as a copy, but you can be sure that the copy is exact that way.

So are you literally just making duplicates of your drives? If so, why not go NAS because that way you would only need one redundant drive out of your four and have full redundancy of all your data.

Ok here is the problem. I have the WD drive formatted for NTFS (ISO files}that I did using the WD software but when I loaded the drive in the DUNE I got an error that I have to format the disc using the Dune but if I do that it erases all the data Shocked

Now here is the rub if I format a blank drive using the Dune and try to copy the drive using my PC I have to reformat it again using WD software or the computer no longer sees the drive ?

Is there a way to format a blank drive in the Dune and copy a loaded external drive through the Dune USB port ?

The Dune should be able to understand NTFS so it shoudl work in the PC and the DUNE. You might be hitting an issue with the large block size on the new WD drives, but I never had that problem when I was using 2TB drives in my DUNE. You sould try fromatting the WD in the DUNE as NTFS and then checking to see if the drive works in the computer...

But the DUNE and windows should both be using GPT (not MBR) on those large drives.

Yep I tried that but after formatting w/the dune (in NTFS) my PC no longer saw the drive. I had to format the drive with the WD software again before my PC could recognize the drive. When the drive is formatted for NTFS in the Dune it wipes the drive clean....

I forgot that on my computer the ISO files have been tagged to mount with Virtual Clone Drive. How should the files be tagged to mount using the Dune?
Also how do I add that option to my computer so I can re tag the files to open with the Dune as it doesn't of course see the Dune as an option...
