Who has ever had this before??
What are those black metal pieces under the adjustment wingnut for?
Since ive had this RUNCO DTV 991 up the convergence has been flawless on the blue and green, nothing there really moves. But the red has been slowly over a number of weeks getting to the point where it needs a very minor touch up. When i refocused it mechanically, i had to move all the settings for the red again, which ended up pretty much where they were when i last focused it and set it all up...
I was just looking at the all white test pattern to look for the moving bars as seen in another recent thread ( yes mine has them on that pattern, not on any one tube, you need 2 tubes on or no lines... ) and i noticed the red looked abit soft, the green is still razor sharp, and the blue would be too if the blue defocus was turned off ( as in its mechanically perfect )
My 9PG doesnt have these metal pieces on the lenses, and never had any drift issues either ( HD 6 lenses )
When setting the mechanical focus, i use the short focusing binoculars and with the electronic focus way off, looking at the screen center til i see the grain snap into view.

The pg xtra also have those metal plates. I'm not sure, but the only purpose I can imagine for them is x-ray cancellation, like the lead shield in Electrohomes.

Yeah i know, ive seen them on another machine that has HD 145s on it. They are gone now, i took them off.

My XG1100 exhibits this issue as well Case, hence why I want to do a full restoration on it. It IS 15 years old, and no one seems to really care about the electronics of these units until it takes something out and makes the projector inoperable or intolerable to use.
I have to do touch ups every weekend, just to keep the image looking the way it should, thats the nature of used electronics. I would imagine that not every projector will have these issues, surely your old one probably didn't, or maybe it had a few very minor problems which eventually drove you to the XG...
The subconcious can do some amazing things

Jeremy, the PG has zero issues and is still perfectly good, no drift ever. I havent touched it up at all since it went up in its new spot.
My XG doesnt have an issue with electronics, it was the red lens moving that caused the need for continual adjustment. Green and blue never moved, was always red, and over a few weeks the red image would get smaller to the point where id have to move the red linearity and amplitude again. As soon as i corrected the mechanical focus again, the red image was larger.
Digitalayon, there are metal plates sitting there that seem to cause movement. I took them all off now so it shouldnt move again.

Yeah? Well mine have all been co-calibrated by John Jameson & the Chivas Brothers, although at one point in thier absence i had William Grant and his sons passing the screw drivers along with a delegation of Teachers all pitch in to lend a somewhat steady hand. Johnnie Walker and Mr Haig were more interested in just watching movies and smoking cuban cigars...
