|
|
Hi everyone,
I work in a recycling center and came across a Marantz SR-7001, that someone brought in because it was stuck in standby mode. Apparantly this is a common problem with the SR-series, I found 2 other threads on a similar problem on this site alone.
The problem here is that the standby-light is blinking at 2 blinks/sec right from startup, so no relay clicks, nothing on the display. The service manual states:
| Quote: | | Trouble in Other (the contents of detection are not indicated to FL). When the abnormalities of +-15V power supply and the +-power supply for Power Amp are detected, the unit will be in standby mode. The detection is performed by 66pin (P LINE FAIL) |
So if I read correctly this obvious Google-translate they used in the manual , the problem starts(!) at the power supply.
But how to get to it? I'm used working on vintage stuff, so usually enough space to work around the boards, but this is ridiculous .
Would anybody here have a "plan of attack" on how to disassemble this thing? And what I should look out for? I bought it off the center for only $10, but I think it would be a shame to waste this thing. My primary AV-amp is a Yamaha DSP-AX761, and I'm very happy with it, but would love to get the Marantz working again...
TIA,
James

Well it looks like you need to test the + and - 15v supplies. They are on the regulator board. You do have a copy of the service manual? Dmm and solder iron?

I know where to start testing and the general logic of the SR, it's the disassembling part I'm having trouble with. The standby board e.g. sits at the bottom underneath the speaker output boards, the contacts on the regulator board are blocked by the heat-sink, and everything is sooooo crammed (I mean, compared to the vintage stuff I've worked on).
So, I wanted to know whether someone had any experience with this model, or whether there is any "special stuff" to worry about...

The + & - 15v regulators sit on the power amplifier board on the SR7002, and you should be able to get that out without removing the standby supply and the speaker output boards. I'm pretty sure the 7001 is laid out the same, only difference with the later model is HDMI 1.3 instead of HDMI 1.1 and Dolby Headphone. I had to replace the 12v standby transformer on mine, and that's mounted on the standby board under the speaker output mentioned above. And another weird oddity, my amp shut down after 5-10 seconds with the RS-232 control board attached. Once I removed that, it stayed powered up & worked fine.
Hope this info helps, or maybe I'm way off base.

Hi Ray. Yours was one of the two threads I mentioned earlier, so I was aware of the RS232-problem But my problem is different in that yours "clicked", so the power arrived at the relays. Mine doesn't click, so the problem must start at the power supply, or nearby. And to get to those testing points, I need to get some boards out of the way.
In vintage stuff, either you've got enough elbow room to maneuver, or the boards come out quite easily, even without cutting or unplugging anything (or you're working on a Kenwood KA-9100, but that's a different story), and this is clearly not the case.
I'm pretty sure that if I tested any of the points I can reach, my DMM wouldn't register anything anyway (or would it?.. )

I removed a bunch of screws on the right side of the back panel, by the speaker terminals and loosened others further towards the middle. This allowed enough flex that I was able to remove the speaker output board from the standby board under it.
That should give you enough room to get to what you need.

Thanks for the tip, Ray.
After unplugging the regulator pwb from the power pwb (CN90), I got a steady amber light instead of a red blinking light, nothing on the display. I also noticed this (sorry for the quality):
back of the power pwb
Any ideas?

I haven't seen an amber light, and I can't seem to locate the SM at the moment, so I don't know what that means.

Haven't seen anything about an amber light in the SM. In any case, I've started taking out the boards, and will set up a test configuration this weekend, making it easier to check the different points. Your thread (and of course the comments of MacGyver) will be a good starting point...
BTW, SM can be found here: Marantz SR7001 SM (13-part download)
