I am knee deep into repairing one of these:

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/13416756@N02/3049103317/

The takeup reel slows down and stops about 5 seconds after you press play. FF and REW are solid. I think I know what part has died. I'll post more once the job is done, it's part of a very cool musical restoration project...

Really cool!
And its ANALOG!!! Thumbs Up
I once helped in constructing a sound recording studio (I did all electrical/electronical stuff). They had one similar machine and a digital system called ADAT from Alesis which recorded 8 tracks on a VHS video tape. They did have three of it in order to get 24 tracks, If they needed more they would use the analog system in parallel.
I could imagine that the problem was/is related to the sensors which tell the drive logic if the reels are spinning. In those times they were made of simple light barrier or reflection sensors which would be prone to dust and/or aging. Nowadays those are hall effect sensors which mostly are immune to these effects.

Regards,

I might scan the schematic and send it to you. I'm pretty sure I have it nailed down to a few key components, but they are using a couple of 741s as current amplifiers. No voltage present at the input or outputs.

No question that the drive signal going to the motor driver is dying in play mode. Solid and high output in FF mode. IN play mode it comes up to 5 volts, and then drops slowly. About 1 in 10 times, the reel motor won't spin at all. So I'm suspecting one of the 741s that's not outputting properly, or the driver to the 741s is a weird chip that I've never seen before, it consists of 4 FETs in a DIP package. One FET used per function, and their outputs are summed. If the play MOSFET is screwed, it can do it as well.

I wouldn't even know where to start, let alone be willing to operate on it Laughing Curt you have me impressed!! Shocked Definitely more complex than a CRT IMO, at least as far as repairs go Very Happy

Hey Curt. Maybe we should start a thread of the odd stuff we repair. One of my lastest repairs.

No red analog output. Digital output was fine. Needed a new chip.

LOL..... I'm sure you have piles... It's not the amp factor that puts it in the odd category, it's the brand.... Very Happy

You and I usually know what each other is working on anyways. Laughing

Edit: Just realized you may have been responding to Analogs post...

Is that where it's from? Most of the sticker has been torn off. It's breathing some life now, had more then 1 problem, still can't decide if it was a return that didn't work from the factory or a failure later. Has odd ball symptoms and odd blown parts.
