ok, this is weird, i get a v-fail on the clm and tried a new clm (incl known working dpb) and changed out the vdm and the ribbon cable and still no go.
i reseated the hdm and the lvps too and cleaned the contacts.
any suggestions are welcome.

The Vertical board itself. I had 2 fail back to back after having an H/V problem.

Make sure the ribbon cable is connected correctly, it might be one pin off.

You've pretty much covered everything I'd change. Glycol on the backplane maybe? I'd scope the input and outputs of the V board to see if you have signal. Open yoke? (V deflection winding) V connectors on the V board off by 1 pin? I've done that too often to count...

no, it`s not the backplane and not the ribbon cable.
the -5v however is just -1 1/2 volt on the motherboard so could that cause the v-fail?

That can do it, but I've never had that before.

changed out (all at the same time with known working parts) lvps, vdm, hdm, clm and disconnected focus and the convergence board and still no go.
looks like a bad deflection yoke indeed, will try another tube probably tomorrow.
btw, if one yoke is bad all tubes are affected right?

I'm not seeing where a yolk can pull down that -5v supply. It is tied directly to the vfail circuit and powers a few chips. I would be looking at that -5v supply very closely....
Of course you can try a yolk, you never know......

it`s not one of the tubes either, neckboards, or any of the cards.
i haven`t got the faintiest of what it could be.
still - 1 1/2v on the -5v supply even with another known good lvps.

Hi,
If the -5V is too low then several of the signal generators on the CLM won't work properly as the OP-Amps in those circuits use a symmetrical +5/-5V supply. So I would expect several effects. One could be that the vertical deflection waveform is not correct or missing and this would kick the V-Fail monitoring.
I've looked through the schematics and could see that the following boards make use of the -5V:
- Control Module (CLM)
- Contrast Modulation Board (CMM)
- Stigmator Waveform Board (SWB)
- Video Input Module (VIM)
- Video Neck Boards (VNB)
I would take out all of them and the LVPS and then measure the resistance between the -5V line and ground on the Motherboard's LVPS connector. If this tests OK (infinite resistance) then I'd plug in one board at a time leaving out the LVPS and repeat the measurement. If at one point You measure a value below some hundred Ohm You might have found the culprit. I believe that there must be some faulty board or circuit which draws the -5V line to ground.
I don't know about the specs of the -5V line so I don't know at which current it is specified. The 3A fuse on the VIM gives us a hint and we could expect it to be something around that value. So if there's a load drawing enough current so that only -1.5V are left then I'd expect it to have a quite low resistance (less than 10 Ohm).
Of course the problem could be related to the -5V generation, but -as You stated- You already changed the LVPS. The only explanation there could be two LVPS with the same fault (which I don't believe at this moment)...
Regards,
barclay66

thank you barclay, that was a great idea.
the red neckboard was the culprit.
measured 9,5 ohms with the red neckboard attached btw .

Cool!
On this VNB either the CLC449 (U2) or some capacitor related to its pin 4 will most likely be completely shorted. The 9.5 Ohm You're measuring are of the filtering resistor R11 (10 Ohm)...
