Off E-pray, $150.00, green tube is suspect. Its only a 3 hour drive from me to get it, it does power on with no error lights. So now I have spare boards for GOZER, power supplies, and tubes sure are cheaper on the 8" machines.

I'll update when I go to get it.

I was just surfing over at AVS and I think this 8500 is UncleWill's. The only thing that bothers me at this point is if it is him, he was acting as if he knew nothing at all about the machine, "I don't know about the year of build or how many hours are on it" I took him through the menus and asked about the hours the reply was "3300 in stand by an 2275 CRT's on".

I think he might have forgotten a "0" there maybe Rolling Eyes

Its just for parts, but I hate being lied to Evil or Very Mad

Of course it could be someone else but a NASA used CRT in Virgina within 50 miles of the same Guy? Plus UncleWill's pictures look exactly like the discussion I had with the owner, "It's on a shelf I can't get to the back of it and let me get the caps off to see if the green is working."

Ehh, just for parts yes, but why lie and act ignorant? I told the dude I only wanted it for parts.

Why lie?

I'll update tomorrow when I drive to get it.

DOAH! The Marquee was not UncleWill's! but it did come from the same run as the one he has. UncleWill's is 0003 serial number, mine 0009. Machine powered up no issues, but the green is really dim. Bright at 56, contrast at 67, G-2 at 70, dim... really dim.

What gives?

Other than that looks good, clean and quiet.

Say Dave

Measure the green G2 at the neckboard, the tip of R76 should measure around 500 vdc.

The whatchamacallit voltage (p something or other, I can't remember....) has drifted too high and burned the cathode on the tube....I'd bet...I had a 9500LC with three pristine looking tubes that simply wouldn't put out any light...shame...

Be surprised if the Filament voltage drifted in an Ultra...... Thought that was fixed long before that. Could be wrong though.

Who knows for sure, but this 8500 was just decommissioned from NASA. Hopefully they maintained it properly. What I find strange though, now that I have looked it over, is that it was left in standby for 35,000 hours, tubes on 2700 hours. Weird that it was in standby for that long.

Do the simulators have some kind of need for instant ready or something? I mean NASA guys should know who to turn something off correctly, right?

Some of the stored memories are 104.93h 96.00v 63.90H 60v 104.92H 96V 103.86H 95.99v

These are well past 1080p right?

The red and blue look perfect, the green gray scale looks right on the tube face, just dim.

Tim, is R76 the resistor near the G-2 lead, or is it the G-2 pin?

I remember to a thread where a Greek guy found a similar marquee (with 20000ish stand-by, and low on time) the simptoms were the same: dim output. I think he could manage a CRT rejuvenating to the tubes, it helped a bit, but not enough, this is a sad death for a CRT even if it is only a 8".

35000hr is insane... it is 9,5hrs/every weekday for 14 yeras!

....x1060 @ 96Hz gives ~105kHz scanrate
1024x768 @ 60Hz gives the 63.9kHz scanrate

Just north of the G2 lead.

That is a lot of standby hours; the green gun is toast.

the Cathode in a vacuum tubes creates electrons by burning a filament. IT should last for well over ten thousand hours, probably even 20Kwuith correct P14 voltage, but 35 THOUSAND, nothing lasts forever.
stupid standby button

There were two thoughts on this, one was that by keeping the projector in standby, it would also keep it warmed-up, and ready for quick display. The other was to turn it off to save the tubes and electronics from wear. Nasa and the other organizations chose to use standby probably because some not-so-informed tech advised them to use standby. And if you looked at the AMX or Creston Code, it was also in the code.

Me, I've always turned mine off, mainly because it made sense to do so.

These were stereo (Immersive) rates for Stereoscopic Presentation Systems. the screen were usually 5:4 aspect ratio

And yes, they usually close to the 1080P we use today in bandwidth, because they were usually 1280X1024 (or similar) @ 96hz or 104hz refresh rate.
