|
|
My dad has a Pioneer PL-L800 Linear tracking turntable that we recently bought off ebay, and though it is working, when it spins up for use, the motor makes noise until it gets up to full speed for the speed selected. My fear is that the motor is worn out. On top of that when the slightest bit of pressure is applied to the platter as far as using say a microofibre cloth it slows to a halt almost instantly.
My Pioneer PL-600 (not the cheap black POS version) has a much much stronger motor, and though I know they are 2 totally different models, I would think that the motor of the PL-L800 would be strong enough to at least withstand a light dusting....
Is it going out? If so where would I even find a motor besides ebay (since I dont beleive any are on there)... This is a bit rarer of a turntable and it has the original box/packaging/documentation/shipping hardware etc... so it would be a shame to lose it to a fauty motor down the road....

Are you sure it can't be lubed? I've never had to replace a TT motor in the 100s I've ever worked on. Even a completely seized motor always has been brought back to life.

Thats what I thought, I've never heard of a cooked motor in these things, they were made reliably and all it does is rotate a record anyway so it shouldn't go out...
It probably needed a cleaning like you said Curt, since I took your advice and I shot deoxit (it has lube in it, think its potentiometer cleaner/lubricant) and that made the noise dissapear, it works much better now, though the motor is still weak compared to my PL-600, but I suppose the newer the turntables got the motors started going down in quality as well (like the rest of the plastic crap of the 80s)
Ty for the advice Curt,
