Region-free means you can order BD's from Europe or Japan and play them in the Oppo, unlike most Blu-ray players. If all you ever watch is mainstream stuff, it's no big deal. But, if you're a film nut, into anime, foreign films, special interest, etc., then a region-free player is worth its weight in gold.

Thanks Steve, I kinda thought that was the deal, I watch a few foreign films if recommended but mostly I just rent them from netflix.
I can see the advantage but it wont bother me not to have it. I guess I could add it later if I wanted, kinda nice to know.

From all ive read, that is quite an exceptional machine, and in my opinion a better choice than the Sony you were looking at.

At twice the price, I hope it lives up to its reviews.

Great choice congratulations.

I think its the best BD player you can get new out there today, even better choice than the Oppo 95.

I had the Cambridge BD 651 not long time ago, but it had a firmware bug, that didn't alow 1080i out on component outputs.

It did 480i or 576i if forced in pal mode. playing Blu Ray movies.

Would be interesting if you or someone else with a new OPPO 93 could test if its the same problem with the oppo firmware, like its the same machine.

One of the many things you pay for when you drop more coin on an Oppo vs a cheapie (or even a more expensive model) from another manufacturer is firmware updates. Oppo does a phenomenal job of fixing firmware bugs and bugs that result from poor authoring of various discs. I'm not aware of any other manufacturer that does this. I've owned many Oppo players - my mom still uses the OPDV971H (Oppo's first player) that I passed down to her several years back, and it still works like a champ.

THe BDP-93/95 are the best BD players at any price hands down. The BDP-83 is also exceptional and a good choice. The 83 boots faster than the 93 because the 93 has more features like Netflix and Vudu streaming as well as others. The 93 supports 3D and the 83 does not.

I was going to suggest the 83 or 93 to you Jeff, but honestly I didn't think you would want to drop that much coin on the player. I think you made a perfect choice though Thumbs Up

Thanks, I'm not sure if it will produce a noticable difference in PQ on a G70 or not I hope so.

I think it will Jeff. The colors will be different for sure the picture noise will be less. Now as to whether or not you will like the difference is a whole nother thing. Wink

I had one for a short time and did not like it. And over on AVS there were others who echoed my thoughts.

I have no idea who they were, but there was a definite subset of people that felt the 93 was artificial looking, just as I felt.

I posted over on AVS about my thoughts, somewhere, and here to I think?

Anyway Its not a bad machine, just a little different than my current Sony BDS 350.

I agree but in dim light it's hard to see the power and eject button on the chassis. IMO they should have added a back light... Confused

I don't have many points of comparison, but with the exception of the cheap-o/rickity ejection drawer, I love my 83. I thought the power button is back lit...guess I know how to find it easy enough. The eject button is similar - I've learned to find it b/c every time I open or close the unit's tray, I stand there to help it...just a very gentle bit of upwards pressure seems to make it much happier as it opens and closes. I figure if I'm opening/closing it, I'm going to be there anyway...drives me nuts, but as a poor boy, I live with it. For the prices the fetch, I hope the 93/95 fixed that!

I know there were (are?) aftermarket region-free kits for the 83 and others from a company in the UK for ~$75 or so IIRC.

That's what the remote control is for, Tom! Wink

Seriously, I don't use any of the buttons on my equipment. That's what my remote is for. I bet I've turned my prepro on or off with the front-panel button maybe 10 times in a few years. It turns one along with the rest of the gear when I press the "System Power On" button on my remote.

The oppo came today. I spent half the day reading the manual, setting it up and watching it.
I gotta say it was worth the extra money. The difference on my G70 was huge. Now if it was on a nine inch machine then maybe I could
see daves point. It is so much sharper and brighter, on a nine incher it could possibly take away from the film "feel" but on my PJ it just looks great. Braveheart never looked better.
It has separate contrast, brightness etc... etc... controls if adjusted properly I think you could get that "film feel" back.
For the record I couldnt be happier with it.

What player are you comparing the Oppo to, Jeff?

Did you A-B with the same disk, or are you just going from memory?

Your comments are kind of tantalizing because I've been getting along fine with my PS3 since I started watching BD... But, I keep reading lots of great comments on the 83 and it makes me want to upgrade... I just don't want to spend the money!

Glad you like it.

Steve, I ended up getting the 93 because it was only about 25 more when you figured in shipping.
I compared it to my Sony BDP S550. Apples to apples It blew it away !
The best 500 bucks I could have spent, The only better spent money was paid to Craig Rounds.
I love everything about it.

Yeah, sorry - I meant the 93, not the 83.

Good to hear. I'm sure I'll get around to getting one eventually.

I'm so pissed. Somebody sold one locally for way too cheap, but I missed it by mere hours.
