There is a g70 with a blown out deflection board for sale locally to me and I was wondering if its possible/worthwhile for me to attempt to make a xg/g70 hybrid? basically want to use the Sony optics and tubes in the XG chassis.

They are not just compatible, but they are using the same tubes.

XGLC has HD-134, what's on Sony? In that era only the G70 and XGLC (and Cine8?) utilized 8" tubes with LC system (marquee 8500LC using 9" lens system) and there was only one lens manufacturer, neither of them said to be significantly better performer, so if they are not the same the difference is negligible.
