There must be a lot of wasted phosphore with that orientation. How large can the image be?

Phosphor utilization is probably actually very good. If it's really 3200p and 16:10, then it would be a 5120x3200p display. With a 10% blend zone, each machine would be running about 3072x3200, which is nearly a square raster!

I'd guess it's driving a rear-projected curved screen. By stacking the CRTs vertically, you get much more uniform side-side focus, better color uniformity, better linearity, and a better blend.

I bet that thing is seriously impressive with good graphics horsepower driving it. Last time I saw a RP edge-blended system, it was a $125,000 SGI computer the size of a refrigerator driving it... A $100 gaming card now has far more graphics horsepower.

I only see the 2 projectors but no blend.

Yes, the owner said that is a blending system.

16:10 at 3200p

You can see a particular position of deflection yokes Shocked

does he sit between those 2 projectors to watch a movie or play a game or is this a rear projection setup?

That's no-doubt a rear-projection setup.

I remember when I first started LCD repairs years ago, I had 4 IBM 21" 5:4 LCD monitors I got in a pallet of LCDs, they were all 2048x1536, only one worked correctly, man, with the same resolution images that was one crispy ass LCD monitor. The first one I saw with no visible pixel structure. Then I learned it was only a $17,000 display, that explained a lot Razz

IBM also made a widescren version, I believe is was 3840x1600 or higher yet, its super rare and now super outdated, Im sure the response time on it is putrid and unusable for video, but they already had these resolutions over 12 years ago.

So, yes digitals were actually there years ago as well, just they were extremely rare and expensive, and barely advertised.

And as sad as it is to say, I am sure that your CRT monitor at that resolution (unless its one of them awesome sony 24" dealies or a video production monitor) had soft and somewhat harder to read lettering. Though I am sure the overall picture was extremely smooth looking and quite impressive.
