..what would you guys use as a decent vintage receiver or pre/power amp for a vintage 2 channel system?
When I picked up my latest find, the Akai GX400, the guy had a HUGE setup in his basement. He basically had a low wall unit with all sorts of mixers and preamps set up, god only knows in what configuration, but what struck me is that he had most of his equipment mounted in small racks, and the whole setup looked very clean and very presentable.
So I got to thinking.. once I get the 30ish projectors out of my living room (should be by the end of the year), I should really set up a nice 2 channel system which is display-worthy. I currently have:
1-Akai GX400D
2- Technics 1500 series
1- Crown 824 RTR in a tilted rollaround rack
1-Sony Elcaset (!!)
1-pair EV Interface Ds
1- pair large vintage JBL 15" 2 way that need restoriing
1- pair Martin Logan Electrostats.
I do run across about once a year things like:
-Sansui 909db
-Pioneer high end SX series receivers.
I kept selling them as I get big $$ for them. I'm leaning towards something like a Pioneer SX1250 or 1280, but other ideas are welcomed.

You'll just replace those 30ish with a new batch............ You will never see your true living space ever again.

No, I have a deal with the g/f. She gets her kids out of the house, I get my 100+ 'kids' out of the house, and we get married.
It's a 3-5 year plan.

It's a 13-15 year plan. |
There fixed it!

That indeed is probably more realistic.
It's also why you and I could never be roommates, it would change to a 30 year plan!

I can just see how us being room mates would go.
AR "Curt have you seen my TEAC 8030 dual cassette deck? I left it right here."
Curt "Oh yeah that went on eBay over the weekend. I got a great price for it."

Here's what I would do:
1 - Rebuild the Quad preamps and amps you just got.
2 - Buy an adjustable stereo electronic crossover - many old ones available on ebay for cheap.
3 - Give me the model number on the 15" JBL's and I'll use Bassbox to give you best box design for them.
4 - Pick up an old solid state power amp (old Crown DC-300?) to use for the JBL's
5 - If your Technics RTR doesn't have Dolby B built in, look on the Bay for an old Advent unit.
6 - The Quad amps will drive your M-L's.
If you do this, I'll send you some old 4-track, 7", prerecorded tapes in the original boxes that were distributed by Ampex in the 1950's and 1960's. Most use Dolby B, which is why I recommend you get the Advent.
It should sound impressive if you don't mind a little tape hiss.

And if you go with separates, I cant say much for preamps, but you can always go with a Sansui B-2302 Amplifier

well, Curt said that he already has a pair of Martin Logans - from what i rmember they are first gen Logans - early 90's or so.
those speakers will require a bit of meat on the amp as the impedance can dip quite low - my CLS (same vintage) dip down to below 2 Ohms, but they run quite well on tube amps on the 4Ohm tap.

Interesting list, that's for sure. I think I'll stick with a more mainstream amp over some of the esoteric amps mentioned here. First though, I need to get rid of stuff in the living room so I can see the carpet again.
Zap, post a pix of that XXX amp I was drooling over at your place.. the one with the nice tartan logo.

That 2600 was $12,000 a week ago, I think the guy is off his rocker and cant get back on it...
Usually I see those go for $2000-$3000 in good condition, nice receivers, the blue Oscilliscope is what makes it unique

Curt, you can go with a SX-1280 for a good price of $1000 or less, great receivers, 185wpc at .03% THD 8 ohms,
I THINK it goes up to 240 wpc with a 4 ohm load. Nice compromise for power/price ratio
