Awesome! Do you still use them, and if so have you had them rebuilt? What are you driving them with?

Bob

they are my daily drivers for TV and radio/streaming in the family room. That system grew from a "vintage" systems that I was building years ago.

I'm driving them with a Meitner STR-55 right now, but at it's most vintage, I had a pair of MC60 driving them, and the QUAD 44 driving those. sources were LP12, reVox B77 and a Sansui Tuner. It was a truly sweet system.

I think your infecting me. I'm picking up that Akai 1730DD SS and a pair of KLH CB-10 Speakers and possibly a pair of Advent 1's today. Well if they set up the pick up time. All for under 150.

Careful on that Akai. It's a pretty old one, will most likely need lots of work. Good score on the speakers. Check the foam for rot though on each one. If the foam is falling apart, it's about $60 per speaker to fix. Parts Express sells foam kits for cheap, but it's a bit tricky to do.

The guy says it works fine. Bob told me to feel the play head for any wear. Anything else i should check out?

Which speakers? Both or the KLH? I'm more excited about the KLH, i read some people who have them and say they were surprised by the sound they gave considering the different cabinet style.

I believe both used the foam surrounds. If the deck is running, great, but I've had some earlier ones that turned into a 4 hour job for 'slow rewind', and then I ended up writing it off. Still, for hte price of everything, it's worth investigating...

For the advents I read that if they used the foam you had get the right kind, some apparently are thicker than others. They need the more playable type.

hopefully I'll get return pick up calls soon!!

Nash, just working from memory here, but these models don't ring a bell to me. If I remember correctly, The most popular model by far was the KLH-6 and their flagship was the KLH-4 both of which were acoustic suspension. A couple of years later they introduced the KLH-10 which was a little smaller but was ported. The KLH-6 was a market leader until Henry came out with his famous Advent.

So Zap and I drove across town and grabbed the Quad stuff. $275. Smile Don't be too jealous though, it needs a LOT of work.

THe amp and preamp power up. Front panels are pretty clean. Power amp has 50 years of dust on it, needs massive cleaning.

The AM tuner (boo!) lights up, but no static, nada. Switches are major dirty. Filter caps are toast. HHHUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.....

One KT66 glass tube is loose in the bakelite base. (anyone got suggestions what glue to squeeze into the tiny gap between the base and the glass to hold it in place without stinking?)

I'll post some pix on Sunday.

Zap survived coming to my place to unloading it. He can comment if he wants. Razz

For those of you seeking rare tube stuff, feast your eyes on THIS local ad:

Here's the final outcome of this unit.

BTW, this was a Craigslist find locally. The seller didn't put a lot of identifying terms in his auction, and it was only a fluke that I was one of the first to click on it at 6:00 AM. Apparently he had over 40 inquiries. So keep looking, you too deserve a YOU SUCK this year! Smile

Curt, I got an email back for the B&K stuff. I might make plans to go look at it tonight. what should I do? I'm sure you and or Mac could walk me through some stuff. I wonder if this was returned units that they just replaced with new and never got around to refurbishing or what?

I guess the main thing is, see if they're complete. If they are a bunch of stripped parts units, then they may not be worth anything, but if they are complete, just grab them all. The price is right from what I can see.

I just looked at the pix again> Looks like some units are parts only, but if some are complete and don't look like one screw is holding the cover onto the chassis, then just take them all.

BTW, I linked Tinman to my eBay auction for the Quad stuff, as I know that he knows his vintage audio. He emails back saying 'what a coincidence, a buddy of mine just picked up the identical equipment here in LA for $100 last week'.

Now what are the chances of THAT?

I see some are not complete just by the pics. I'll offer low 100 and say looks like some were used for parts and missing key components.

I figure if I cant fix them i should be able to ebay them at 20-25 bucks each buy it now and make a few extra bucks.

Yup. I'd list them at $10 each, no reserve. I do that with a lot of stuff, and usually a bidding war breaks out, which of course is the idea. Smile

So I went to look at them. The Guy meets me there, has an accent. Arab sounding but he looks hispanic. We go into a warehouse, and he opens some fenced in area with pad locks. Way in the back I can see what looks like a ham radio or short wave radio set up with some of those round flexible desk lamps and a few computers on. Then 3 guys come out and they all start talking arabic, one Guy covers up the radio with a sheet near by. Hmmm ......

So he shows me the pallet of gear, most is cannibalized , there were four sonata series big heave power amps with caps the size of oil filters. but the AC input board PCB's were delaminating, Damn it!! then he takes me into the fenced area after the 3 guys turn off the computer screens and shows me shelfs and shelfs of B&K parts, I mean cases of blank PCB,s control boards video pre am sections etc, boxes full of board to board connectors, smd resistors, caps, heat sinks etc. Looks like they bought everything form when B&K moved. So to make along story short I bought nothing and left feeling like I i walked into some secrete shady affairs.
