Is this a good deal for $199?

Software + the older i1 Display 2.
For $200 is it a good deal or are there other, better options now for the same price?

I don't know if it's better, but here's another option.

X-Rite Eye-One Display LT = $119.00

AVS HD 709 BluRay Test Disk = $0

ColorHCFR software = $0

A great tutorial =$0

Yeah, I took that route once.
It was probably just me doing things wrong, but I had mixed results.
Actually, I'm positive it was just me doing things wrong. Evil or Very Mad

Bruce's suggestion is great for someone just learning to calibrate, but keep a couple things in mind. The OEM i1D2 (the $119 one that he linked) is different from the ones that SpectraCAL sells in that the latter has quite a few extra tables loaded into it to compensate for meter errors with different display types. If you get the OEM i1D2 and HFCR, it may or may not properly read your display. DIY CalMAN with the i1D2 significantly increases your chances of getting a proper result (within the accuracy limits of the meter). I'd say for $80 extra, having that flexibility/assurance is definitely worth it.

**Edit - sorry, I missed that the ad states that it's an OEM i1D2. I'd contact SpectraCal and see if they have any features in CalMAN that help compensate for the D2's improper reading of certain displays.

I wouldn't spend the money on that meter. I haven't read anything about the new Spyder 4, but that may be an option depending on price (when if Spectra gets one). I would just spend the money on i1 Display Pro from ChromaPure. If you can't swing that or get a buddy to go in with you, then rent a Munki from Spectra. A last resort is the i1 Display 3 retail, but I am not sure if you can use it with pjs.

Shamless plug:

Now would be a good time to remind people that CurtPalme.com has the i1 Display Pro (aka Display 3) bundled with ChromaPure availble at discounted prices.

See: http://www.curtpalme.com/ChromaPure_EyeOneDisplay3.shtm

Thanks for your support! Smile

I'd personally spend the extra $200 for the ChromaPure/i1D3 package, the i1D2 can't hold a candle to the D3 in terms of speed, low light sensitivity, accuracy, and flexibility. Plus you're supporting a great forum!

The D3 is most certainly a major jump in performance. Because of the excellent bang for the buck performance, it's pretty much the only meter that we carry that sells anymore.
