Ok, now connect your DMM also and set it on DC. Then plug in the power supply and give me the reading.

Are you going to be able to lift some legs on that CPU? Tiny work. I usually use an exacto knife and a sharp tip iron.

Well the receiver doesn't work anyway right? I have done some work on video cards so I am willing to attempt this. I have 6 new sharp tips for my iron, and 1 xacto Smile

what ones do I lift?

Do these 1 at a time in the order I give them. Test your voltage after each pin. Hopefully the voltage comes up without all power pins lifted.

One more thing about lifting these pins. Dont try lifting up with your exacto knife. Use your knife like a lever using an ajoining pin as a fulcrum. You get better control on the pin your lifting so it doesn't fly right up and break off. Also, dont force it loose or you may damage the board. Wait for the solder to melt and them try to gently pry it up. Just lift it around a 1/16 on an inch and then use your knife to swipe the solder from undermeath. And make sure it's completely disconnected. Sometimes a little hair like piece of solder is still connecting the pin even though it looks clear. Again, just swipe your knife under the pin to ensure it's free.

So here's the pins. Remember, test after each pin.

143

132

24

23

39

59

74

91

Have fun. See you in a few hours....

Very Happy

Holy Hell, man I almost NEED glasses to see that stuff, nevertheless I must say I have gotten pins 143 and 132 lifted, what a task, I have to say I think installing a new chip would be easier than removing this one!!

Anyway Im posting back because I removed 143, and no change on the voltage, still read 2.64vdc, I removed pin 132 and it now reads 2.99vdc

I will stop removing pins until you post back just to make sure I should keep going or not

Yes, keep going. But take note of which pins cause change. If you get to a pin and the voltage comes up to +5, then stop and post back.

Okay mac, I'll bet a small percentage of people on this forum would be able to do this without messing the chip up! I am one of the few! Very Happy

Anyway, here are all the pin numbers that I wrote down, they are the only ones that had any change:

Pin 132 - From 2.64vdc to 3.03vdc

Pin 23 - From 3.03vdc to 3.08vdc

Pin 39 - From 3.08vdc to 3.12vdc

Pin 59 - From 3.12vdc to 3.18vdc

Pin 74 - From 3.18vdc to 4.60vdc

Pin 91 - From 4.60vdc to 5.60vdc

Yes, all 8 pins that you specified are disconnected

Ok, lets start with the 2 pins that made no difference.

One at a time. Take your exacto knife and go to 1 of the pins and put the point on the pad of the pin and then touch the pin as to make contact. Then plug in your power supply and see if your voltage goes down any from the 5.6v.

Okay pin 143 when contact is made brings the voltage down to 3.30vdc

Pin 23 brings it down to 3.17vdc

Pin 39 brings it down to 3.23vdc

Pin 59 brings it down to 3.23vdc

Well I guess you know what that means. Now you have to decide if it's worth any more investing. Since you dont know if even replacing the CPU if it has other problems or not.

I have $238 into this receiver, thats what I paid for it shipped to my house. If I have to spend more to get it fixed, I feel it is well worth doing so then.

As for what else could be wrong with the receiver? I'm not sure, but going by visual inspection, which I've gone through the whole receiver so I know whats going on... I would have to say there couldnt be much left, the power amps look untouched from whoever attempted to work on it before, so thats a good start

I guess if I get this CPU replaced and it at least makes it turn on (and hopefully not fry it) then we can go from there.

Also mac, do you have the tools to replace this CPU? I would feel more comfortable with it in your hands if you do.

Don't worry, the fried CPU does not crush my hopes, nor does it surprise me. A $6000 receiver for $238, I dont think anyone can argue with that if its all in one piece and doesnt look like it got dragged on the road Razz

If it was me I probably would not even hesitate to invest in the CPU. If your total was 300 or even 400 and it still did not work I'm sure you could Ebay it for way more then that. I watch broken high dollar receiver all the time sell for good money.

I checked the dimensions of that chip and the pin spacing and it is just at my borderline. I would not be thrilled about replacing it but I probably should be able to. Of course if anyone else has the equipment to this level or lower(meaning smaller) and they want to do the swap, thats fine with me. My eyes are only getting worse as the years go on, LOL.

Let me know.

Mac, Im willing to send the board to you, I want it fixed, like you said its worth it and will probably bring a good dollar on ebay in the worst of scenarios, but lets hope I dont have to do that, I REALLY REALLY want to use this receiver. Its just too awesome to beleive it cannot be repaired Razz

So I guess let me know how to go about doing this, the receiver does me no good sitting on my kitchen table in pieces. I'm willing to put the effort in(and money:P) to get this thing working. Obviously I dont want to send the whole receiver to you, it is just ungodly massive and even the packing it came in I still didnt trust it being shipped.

I can send you the board though, that wont be a problem. So yeah let me know how to proceed, and again, thank you very much for your help thus far, you have been invaluable!

Hell, please DO NOT send me the whole receiver, LOL.

Order that CPU and when you get it let me know.
