Posted: Wed Nov 30, 2011 6:58 pm    Post subject: G90 Tube Replacement Issue

I've been working with Curt on this but he's pretty busy so I thought I'd try the forum.

I just replaced the tubes in my G90. When I fire it up, the red tube comes on immediately, doesn't go into the "warm up" mode like the other two. Also, when it is on, it has about 10 light horizontal lines across it's face. They are a little tilted and seem to "wobble" a bit but are persistent.

I checked all the wiring, Curt thought I may have bent one of the pins at the back of the tube but they seem ok.

This is actually a replacement G90 so I have two G90's available to try to swap cards out.

The issue that started this was I had a 62 error code on my original unit that couldn't be resolved and the tubes were pretty worn. I tried swapping alot of boards that Curt sent me but couldn't get the error code to go away. I only bring this up because I am leary of swapping the boards from my original G90 to the replacement as I don't want to cause the 62 error code in the new unit.

Any ideas?

I can try to swap that tube with the green tube from my old set if someone thinks it's the tube and not a board associated but I'd rather not do that if no one thinks the problem could lie with the tube. Remember, this tube worked fine in the original G90 it came out of.

Thanks,
Rick

My first guess would of been a bent pin on the tube neck also. Take that neck board off again and really look at those pins. If they are surely ok then try another neckboard. Maybe there is something wrong with the socket. Post back what you find.

Took another close look at the pins (used a mirror to see them all) and they are all intact and looking quite straight. I also did try the neckboard from the other box before I posted and the problem is was still there.

Ok, try this. On the neckboards there is a single red wire. Swap that wire between the red and green and see what you get. I'm leaning another way but want to check this first.

I'll try that but it will take a bit. The wire from the green tube doesn't reach the red tube easily, I'll have to free up the harness a bit to get the green's lead over there. I have to go out in a bit, if I get it before I leave, I'll post back, else it won't be until the morning.

OK, it took a little coercing but I got the leads swapped. The problem remains the same - red tube is still firing up immediately with the lines.

I really appreciate your help.

tube might have some contamination in the grids causing it to turn on instantly. Probably from transportation, what say you Mac?

This tube wasn't transported. It was from my original set. I just moved it to the new set. Thanks!

If you think it's possibly the tube, can I just put the green one in (I have an extra tube) and try it? Any issue with putting the green tube in place of the red?

Not sure if the neck cards are the same for a sony like in a Marquee, it should be ok. I haven't played with the G90 i have yet.
So wait for Mac or another G90 expert to confirm.

At this point, since you have another tube it would probably be best to try swapping it rather then chasing somewhere else if it is the tube.

The only problem is the red tube is mounted 180 degrees different then the green and blue so if you use a green tube to test in the red location you will also have to use a green or blue neck board because the wires are probably not long enough.

Well, I got the green from my other unit placed into the red for the new one and it all hooks up EXCEPT the high voltage line is too short since the entry to the tube is on the outside of the box now.

Can I rotate that tube 180, put it in loosely (not sure if any of the mounting screws will find their mounts), add the lens, ground it and fire the box up?

Thanks.

Just got done. Put the green tube in the red, rotated it 180, managed to get all the leads hooked and fired it up. The problem went away. The green tube did not start up like the red one did and when I hit MENU, they all came on with no problems or artifacts on the tube face.

So I guess, somehow the RED tube from my old box was the problem. Not sure why it happened, it worked in my box but not in the replacement. I was very careful changing it but I guess I may have done something to cause the problem.

Thanks for everyone's help. I notify Curt of how this turned out and take it from there.

Rick

Here's what you can do. Get a 2 cloths and a stick of wood. place 1 cloth on a table and the tube face on the cloth so the neck it facing up. Place the other cloth around the tube neck near the end (just 1 layer). Now "lightly" tap on the tube neck where the cloth is with the wood. Tap it a good 20 times or more. Then reinstall it and see if it works.

Yep, what Mac says, but I just do it while the tube is in and fired up, awesome light show inside tube with snaps and crackles!

Nah, I'll send him a couple of new tubes in LC housings. I'll test the old tube here and will put it in my test chassis if it works.
